Site Characteristics

Location

Crestwood Elementary School is located on Madison's northwest side. A school has been located on this site for over 100 years. Crestwood serves students from the immediate neighborhood, Hawk's Landing, Hawk's Woods and from the Allied Drive area.

Class Size

The enrollment for the 2006-2007 school year is expected to be about 400 students. We are planning for 20 classrooms. The SAGE (Student Achievement Guarantee in Education) grant from the State will keep kindergarten and first grade classes at 15 or fewer students and at 15 students or less in grades 2 and 3 for reading, language arts and mathematics. Class size for grades 4 and 5 is 25 to 1.

Hot Lunch/Breakfast Programs

Crestwood offers both a noon lunch and a breakfast for all interested students. Two or three times a week a hot breakfast is served.

Academic Programming

Academic Achievement

Crestwood has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a "Blue Ribbon School." 93.6% of Crestwood's 3rd grade students scored at proficient or advanced on the 2004-05 Wisconsin Reading and Comprehension Test.

Technology

Students have access to computers in their classrooms, the Media Center, and in the Crestwood Computer Lab. Computer skills are introduced as part of the REACH (Reinforcing and Enriching Achievement for All Children) program and are then utilized in various classroom projects. Graphics, word processing, database searching, electronic research ( CD-ROM and Internet), and spreadsheet use are the areas of emphasis, depending on a student's grade level.

Talented and Gifted (TAG) Program

The goal of Talented and Gifted (TAG) programming is to make certain K-12 students consistently have learning opportunities that are challenging, systematic and continuous based on learning profile, readiness and student interest.

Student learning experiences include a broad range of opportunities that pushes a student to their next level of challenge and allows them to develop their talents. TAG programming may occur in the classroom or in other settings. TAG programming is determined by ongoing evaluation and assessment of individual student needs. Each school has TAG resource support for ongoing consultation.

Special Classes

Teacher specialists in art, music and physical education provide regular instruction to all students. The REACH program extends and supports the classroom curriculum in the area of computer skills. Fifth grade students also have the opportunity to participate in the Strings program.

Other Programs

Crestwood offers a Reading Recovery Program for 1st grade students who are experiencing difficulty learning to read. Services are also provided to students through the Learning Disabled, Emotionally Disabled, Occupational/Physical Therapy, English as a Second Language, and Vision programs.

School Climate

High Family Satisfaction

Crestwood has a diverse student population and the staff works diligently to include parents in school decisions. Crestwood is committed to developing a positive, caring community within each classroom environment.

Safety Is Always A Priority

Crestwood has a school-wide behavior plan that provides all students with opportunities to increase their understanding of appropriate social interaction. At Crestwood, social skills are part of the curriculum just like math and science. The District-wide student conduct plan is followed consistently and fairly.

Partnerships

Family Partnerships

Crestwood Association of Parents & Teachers (CAPT) meets the second Tuesday of each month at school. This group works to provide a link between home, school and the district. It supports academic programming by planning special events such as student assemblies. Through fund raising activities they raise money which also is used to support school academics. CAPT also plays a key role in soliciting parent volunteers. To receive information on times, dates, and location of CAPT meetings, call 608-204-1120.

University Partnerships

Crestwood School has collaborated for over 20 years with the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Education, one of the top ranked education schools in the country. Teachers promote and provide quality teacher education for student teachers who do their student teaching at Crestwood. A "Science Scholars Program" at UW-Madison developed into a collaboration between the director of Owen Park, the UW Entomology Department and Crestwood students to inventory prairie and woodland insects around Crestwood.

Community Partnerships

Crestwood benefits from donated materials and time from many organizations including RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program), MARE (Madison's Area Retired Educators), JFF (Joining Forces for Families) and the Madison Police Department. In turn, the Crestwood community contributes funds to support many worthwhile causes such as UNICEF, Jump Rope for Heart, Food Pantries, Koats for Kids, and environmental causes.
