Site Characteristics
Location
Franklin-Randall is unique in that two neighborhoods join for kindergarten through second grades at Franklin and third through fifth grades at Randall. Franklin is located on the south side of Lake Monona Bay. Randall is located near the University, two blocks west of Camp Randall Stadium.
Class Size
The SAGE (Student Achievement Guarantee in Education) grant from the State will keep kindergarten and first grade classes at 15 or fewer students. Second and third grade language arts and math classes have student/teacher ratios of 15 to 1; classes average 23 students during the rest of the day. The total enrollment at both campuses is 720.
Academic Programming
Achievement Scores
Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Exam: 90% of the Franklin-Randall fourth graders who were assessed in the fall of 2005 scored Proficient or Advanced. Climate Survey: Franklin-Randall parents recently graded our schools 3.47 on a 4.0 scale!
Technology
Franklin classrooms are each equipped with at least two computer stations incorporated into the daily curriculum. Randall has a fully equipped and networked computer lab. Computers are also in Randall classrooms and in the Library and Media Center at both schools. Some students have their own e-mail address; some also use the Internet, scanners, and "quick take" cameras.
Talented and Gifted (TAG) Program
The goal of Talented and Gifted (TAG) programming is to make certain K-12 students consistently have learning opportunities that are challenging, systematic and continuous based on learning profile, readiness and student interest.
Student learning experiences include a broad range of opportunities that pushes a student to their next level of challenge and allows them to develop their talents. TAG programming may occur in the classroom, or in other settings. TAG programming is determined by ongoing evaluation and assessment of individual student needs. Each school has TAG resource support for ongoing consultation.
Special Classes
Teacher specialists in art, music, and physical education provide instruction in these areas. REACH (Reinforcing and Enriching Achievement for All CHildren) extends and supports classroom curriculum at Franklin and computer technology at Randall.
Other Programs
Franklin-Randall offers Reading Recovery in first grade to help students improve reading skills, special education services at all grades and English as a Second Language. In addition, Franklin-Randall provides a school nurse, psychologist, social worker and speech and language clinician.
School Climate
Safety Is Always A Priority
Playgrounds have adult supervision 15 minutes before school and during all recesses. City crossing guards assist children at busy intersections. Students who live 1.5 miles from school are provided free transportation in school buses.
Peaceful Problem Solving and Conflict Resolution
Franklin-Randall staff and families agree on the important educational principle that we want all of our children to learn, grow and thrive in a safe and welcoming environment. A positive learning environment guarantees students the security, confidence and opportunity to do and be their best at all times. We use "key words" to help children learn how to make their own positive interpersonal and behavioral decisions: be safe; be kind; show respect; choose appropriate words; follow directions; think before you act.

Family Partnerships
PTO meetings are held in the fall semester at Franklin and in the spring semester at Randall monthly on Tuesday nights at 6:30 p.m. The Franklin-Randall PTO works diligently to provide a link between home, school, and the district. The PTO also supports academic programming by planning special events and fund raisers, advocating for our children, and soliciting and coordinating volunteers.
University Partnerships
Franklin-Randall collaborates with several departments at the University of Wisconsin-Madison including the Curriculum and Instruction Department in the School of Education, one of the top-ranked teacher training schools in the country. We promote and provide quality teacher education for future teachers and ongoing learning for our professional staff.
