Academic Programming

Achievement Scores

Hawthorne school consistently meets the high standards required by Wisconsin's implementation plan under the No Child Left Behind Act. Average school attendance exceeds the district's average of 94% and is one of the highest elementary attendance rates in the district.

Technology

Hawthorne offers a rewired, networked school, allowing for up to 13 work stations in each classroom and the library media center. Keyboarding, database, spreadsheet and telecommunications skills are taught in grades 4 and 5. The library media center has an online catalog which students and staff can access throughout the building. E-mail is available for students.

Talented and Gifted (TAG) Program

The goal of Talented and Gifted (TAG) programming is to make certain K-12 students consistently have learning opportunities that are challenging, systematic and continuous based on learning profile, readiness and student interest.

Student learning experiences include a broad range of opportunities that pushes a student to their next level of challenge and allows them to develop their talents. TAG programming may occur in the classroom, or in other settings. TAG programming is determined by ongoing evaluation and assessment of individual student needs. Each school has TAG resource support for ongoing consultation. Currently Hawthorne offers an accelerated math program fro qualifying students.

Special Classes

Teacher specialists provide regular instruction in visual arts, music and physical education. REACH (Reinforcement and Enrichment for All CHildren) instruction in art, music or technology provide activities that integrate with, extend and support classroom curricula.

Other Programs

Hawthorne offers Reading Recovery, Title I, special education services, English as a Second Language (ESL) programming and support services provided by the psychologist, nurse, social worker, and speech and language clinicians.

School Climate

Safety Is Always A Priority

Your child's safety is always a priority at Hawthorne. Parents and students gave high ratings for school safety in the annual Madison School Transportation and Hawthorne School Climate Surveys. All students are taught the Student Anti-Victimization (S.A.V.E) curriculum annually. Safety is at the core of the Hawthorne Elementary Discipline Plan.

A neighborhood "Helping Hand" program, School Safety Patrol and adult crossing guards insure student safety to and from school.

Peaceful Problem Solving and Conflict Resolution

Peaceful problem solving and conflict resolution strategies are a school-wide priority at Hawthorne. The Second Step Anti-Violence curriculum teaches students appropriate conflict resolution skills. Hawthorne's "Above the Line" program focuses on teaching procedures and routines tied to the four student goal statements: I am a learner, I am responsible, I am respectful, I am safe.

Partnerships

University Partnerships

Hawthorne maintains a close collaboration with the UW-Madison School of Education, one of the top-ranked education schools in the country. Hawthorne staff promote and provide quality teacher education for future teachers and ongoing learning for professional staff. Many of our student teacher supervisors are recognized each year by the University for their exemplary work.

Working with the UW Center of Biology Education and Edgewood College, fourth and fifth grade students conduct original science research and study the culture of science.

Community Partnerships

Hawthorne has partnerships with several businesses including American Family Insurance, Oscar Mayer and Covance Laboratories. These businesses provide volunteer mentors who come to Hawthorne once a week and spend quality time with their "special" student. Through the United Way of Dane County, Hawthorne receives a half-time Vista Volunteer to recruit and coordinate volunteer efforts. Please call 204-2500 and ask for the Vista coordinator to volunteer.

RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) provides community volunteers in many ways. The FLIP (Friendly Listeners Intergenerational Program) matches seniors with students who call one another either because the student is home alone after school or would like to develop a friendship with a senior. RSVP also provides tutors and mentors. The "Adopt-a-Grandparent" program provides a 20-hour a week, paid retiree to provide support in classooms.

Endowment

Through the work of a dedicated parent endowment committee, Hawthorne has its own endowment. Interest from the endowment is used to fund school projects.

"After five wonderful years at Hawthorne my two daughters have scored above the state average in math, science, reading, writing and social studies. Most importantly they have been exposed to current and diverse issues in our community. Because of the emphasis on teaching through the arts, my daughters sing, dance, play the violin and are very comfortable expressing themselves in front of large groups of people. Hawthorne school has nurtured, taught and made us feel a part of our daughters' education."
-- Hawthorne Parent

"We think the after-school arts programs such as Dance Club and Drama Club are great. The emphasis on the performing arts through plays and school assemblies is excellent."
