Marquette Elementary School

Lapham-Marquette Elementary Schools are a caring and understanding community of students and adult learners. We achieve academic success and promote personal growth for all students through a strong commitment to provide:

  • a stimulating, challenging, meaningful and multicultural curriculum;
  • a safe & nurturing environment where diversity is valued;
  • an open exchange of ideas and knowledge between students, parents and staff.

Lapham/Marquette is a paired school, which has 2 campuses. Grades K-2 are housed at Lapham, Marquette's sister school. Marquette currently serves 217 third, fourth and fifth grade students.

Site Characteristics

Location

Lapham is a kindergarten through 2nd grade school located on Madison's east side with school boundaries stretching from Lake Monona to Lake Mendota and encompassing the Tenney Park area.  Lapham is the closest elementary school to the Wisconsin Capitol; located one block off of East Washington Avenue on East Dayton Street.

Marquette is a 3rd through 5th grade school and is located in the center of Madison's east side isthmus neighborhood on Jenifer Street; one block off of Williamson Street along the Yahara River. The building is shared with O'Keeffe Middle School, SAPAR Alternative Program and Wee Start Childcare Program.

Class Size

At Lapham, our kindergarten and first grade classes have class sizes up to 22 and our second grade classes have class sizes up to 24.  District supported literacy and math allocation keep our class sizes between 15 - 17 for the daily 90 minute literacy block and 60 minute math block at both kindergarten and first grade.  This year we have 11 sections:  4 at Kindergarten, 3 at first grade, one multiage at K/1 and three second grade classes.

The average class size at Marquette is 25 students.  There are nine classroom sections with three classes at each of the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade levels.

Academic Programming

Achievement Scores

Students at Lapham and Marquette are high achievers and consistently score above the district average in most district and state assessments.  The WKCE is a state-wide assessment for students in 3rd through 12th grade.  Please feel free to view Marquette student's WKCE assessment results by clicking on the red icon labeled "Data Analysis" at http://dpi.wi.gov/sig/index.html .  Additional information on achievement scores is available upon request.

Technology

Lapham and Marquette have computers in the classroom, computer lab and in the Library Media Center. Technology is the focus of our REACH (Reinforcing and Enriching Achievement for All Children) programs. Each student, kindergarten through fifth grade, receives 30 minutes a week of computer education.

Special Education Programming

Marquette and Lapham strive to support and attend to students with special needs by providing quality special education services. Programming is based on a student's individual needs and we are proud of the environment created around acceptance, support and inclusion for our diverse population. Our staff works collaboratively to support all students.

Talented and Gifted (TAG) Program

The goal of Talented and Gifted (TAG) programming is to make certain K-12 students consistently have learning opportunities that are challenging, systematic and continuous.  This enrichment is based on the individual's learning profile, readiness and interest.

Student learning experiences include a broad range of opportunities that pushes a student to their next level of challenge and allows them to develop their talents. TAG programming may occur in the classroom, or in other settings. TAG programming is determined by ongoing evaluation and assessment of individual student needs. Each school has TAG resource support for ongoing consultation.

Special Classes

Teacher specialists in art, music, physical education, library and computer technology provide regularly scheduled instruction.  Students have physical education class three times per week for 30 minutes and music for two times per week for 30 minute.  Art and Library/REACH (computer) classes meet for one hour per week.  Students in 5th grade have the opportunity to take Strings and can choose violin, viola or cello two days a week for 45 minutes.

After School Care

Lapham and Marquette have after school care provided by Red Caboose Inc.  They have been providing day care to the Madison community since 1990.  Their phone number is 256-1566.  Scholarships may be available for those students who qualify for them.

Other Programs

Lapham has a wonderful music department that works with second grade students. Students have the option of joining the choir and/or being in our drama productions. The drama group puts on a performance each semester as does the choir.  Second graders also have an opportunity to participate in the Make a Difference team.  This quasi student council group does community service for the school and other leadership activities for the schools.

This year Lapham students will participate in the Madison Symphony program.  A member from the Hunt Quartet will visit each classroom followed by a short concert, culminating in a visit to the Overture Center in the Spring.  In addition, Lapham students will be involved in the Opera for the Young this year.

Lapham offers after school clubs during the second semester of each year through our PTG.  The clubs meet weekly for several weeks and offer several different unique clubs for our students.  Some this year are a Crafts Class, Japanese language, Science is Fun, and Happy Birthday Darwin

Our school teaches the MMSD SAVE  (Student Anti-Victimization Education).curriculum to all of our classrooms and our teachers also teach Second Step.  These two programs combined with our Above the Line behavioral program help make our school a safe place for all children.

Marquette students have the opportunity to participate in "The Battle of the Books." Students in groups of four are challenged to read ten selected books. They then answer questions in a school competition. Winning teams compete at the area level. Marquette students also participate in Math Fest, an event provided by the MMSD TAG division of Teaching and Learning.  The highlights of this event includes several competitions, both individual and team, and a lively program presented by Professor Numbers.

Every year Marquette holds a Spelling and a Geography Bee. Those who choose to enter the competitions have the chance to move on to the All-School bees.   The winners of these two events get to move on to local and state competitions.

A basketball program at Marquette called Dream Camp is designed to educate youth, both girls & boys, in grades 3-5, about the history and fundamentals of basketball. All instructors and coaches volunteer their time to help students learn the game.  All students receive a Dream Camp team T-shirt and parents and family members are encouraged to come to the games and cheer the kids on. Dream Camp is a free program sponsored in part by MSCR and the Marquette/Lapham PTG.

Fifth grade students participate in the C.O.P.S (Classes On Personal Safety) program through the Madison Police Department.  Our third and fourth grades participate in the S.A.V.E. (Student Anti-Victimization Education) program.

The Marquette Mile is a tradition that has been going on for over 15 years.  It's a fundraiser where staff, students and the community walk/run a mile to raise money for the stress challenge programs at Marquette.  The stress challenge programs are programs that emphasize communication, community building and building a positive self concept.  In the 3rd grade students go on an urban adventure.  In 4th grade the students go caving and camping and in 5th grade the students go to the low and high ropes course.  The Marquette Mile is a healthy adventure that helps to support other healthy adventures.

Marquette Student Council is open to all 3rd, 4th,  and 5th  grade students at Marquette Elementary.  Student council members help with Spirit Days, community building and others projects where leadership is needed.  Student council members also help work at the School Store where students get to practice their math skills.

School Climate

Safety Is Always A Priority

Lapham-Marquette uses the "Above the Line" Positive Behavior Program to ensure student safety and to support the learning of positive behaviors through teaching, celebration and community-building. Playgrounds have adult supervision 15 minutes before school and during all recesses. At Marquette school safety patrols learn leadership skills. They are stationed at intersections to assist students when they cross the street. Nursing services are on-site during the school day.

Partnerships

Lapham-Marquette regularly recruits parent volunteers, volunteers from Schools of Hope, R.S.V.P., Edgewood College, the University of Wisconsin-Madison and our greater community.  We are also currently involved with training future teachers from many of the University of Wisconsin School of Education programs.

Marquette has teamed up with University of Wisconsin-Madison medical students and members of our PTG to incorporate a Public Health Initiative called Healthy Classrooms.  This commitment is to develop public health initiatives to ensure that children have ample enrichment and learning opportunities that integrate core curriculum with interactive learning experiences and build skills applicable to daily life.   The focus is on safety and personal health and wellness. Recently, a new and exciting partnership has been formed with the Affirmative Action Advisory Committee that consists of 23 members representing 12 divisions of our state government.  It is an exciting new venture to benefit our school community.
