Muir Elementary School

National School of Excellence

John Muir School, dedicated to an evolving vision of quality elementary education for all its students, cultivates knowledge and skills, develops enthusiastic lifelong learners who embrace and value diversity, fosters self-esteem, and promotes respect for all in the global environment, through research-based individually appropriate and integrated curriculum, and partnerships among school, community, families and others.

Site Characteristics

Location

John Muir Elementary School is located on Madison's far west side within easy walking distance to Jefferson Middle and Memorial High School.

Class Size

Muir's total enrollment is 470 including an early morning and afternoon Early Childhood program and an afternoon Phonology program. Class sizes average 24, except in grades K-1, where classes range from 15-17, thanks to the SAGE (Student Achievement Guarantee in Education).

Academic Programming

Assessment and Achievement

All students are assessed both individually and as classroom groups beginning in kindergarten and continuing through fifth grade. The results of these assessments provide a snapshot of individual student progress. Ongoing assessment also provides teachers with specific information that guides their instructional programs. School-wide data is also critical in the development of the yearly school improvement plan. This plan is designed to increase student success in the areas of engagement, learning and relationships.

Technology

Muir has a fully networked computer lab with 30 computers, a computer station in every classroom, and many in the Library Media Center (LMC). Computers are used to support and extend learning within the classroom. All school computers are fully networked. Laser printers, digital cameras, and scanners are available. Technology standards are realized through the REACH Program (Reinforcement and Enrichment for All CHildren) in grades K through five. Graphics, word processing, electronic presentations, electronic research, keyboarding and spreadsheet use are the areas of emphasis, depending on a student's grade level.

Talented and Gifted (TAG) Program

The goal of Talented and Gifted (TAG) programming is to make certain K-12 students consistently have learning opportunities that are challenging, systematic and continuous based on learning profile, readiness and student interest.

Student learning experiences include a broad range of opportunities that pushes a student to their next level of challenge and allows them to develop their talents. TAG programming may occur in the classroom, or in other settings. TAG programming is determined by ongoing evaluation and assessment of individual student needs. Each school has TAG resource support for ongoing consultation.

Special Classes

Students receive instruction weekly from specialists in music, physical education, art, and computers/technology. Fifth graders may also participate in the strings program.

Special Opportunities and Programs

Opportunities for exploring special interests abound at Muir. Story time and after school Science Clubs are just a couple of the programs available to students. In addition, John Muir School offers Reading Recovery, English as a Second Language, psychologist, social worker, and nurse support services.

School Climate

Safety Is Always A Priority

A student conduct code has been created by the school's safety committee which features high behavioral expectations for students, a harassment-free environment, zero tolerance for fighting, and classrooms free of disruption and focused on teaching and learning.

Above the Line Behavior

At Muir, we create a peaceful and orderly environment for children to grow and learn. Children are directly involved in personal problem solve. Muir is a place where we celebrate the strengths and accomplishments of all children.
