Schenk staff, students and families are committed to ensuring that students use their academic and creative abilities to access, process and generate information that enables them to be problem-solvers and contributing members of a changing society. Students at Schenk are actively engaged in learning - individually and in groups. They seek meaning beyond simple facts, learn to connect learning across curriculum areas, apply what they know to improve the community and work to form meaningful relationships with others. To support students, Schenk staff provide a relevant and challenging curriculum in an engaging environment. Teachers promote critical thinking skills and work to collaborate with parents and the community. This partnership encourages reinforcing what students learn in school by extending that knowledge at home and in the community. |

Schenk is nestled on 12 acres of open space within a surrounding residential eastside neighborhood, near Lake Monona and Olbrich Park and Botanical Gardens.
The SAGE (Student Achievement Guarantee in Education) grant from the State will keep kindergarten through third grade classes at 15 or fewer students. The average class size in grades 4 and 5 is 22 and total enrollment is approximately 400.
The majority of students walk to Schenk. Bus service in supervised school buses is provided to students who live east of Highway 51.
The school office has a list of child care providers and centers in the neighborhood. The YMCA also offers after school care on-site.

In 2004, 100% of Schenk third graders scored "proficient" or "advanced" on the statewide Third Grade Reading test, which is above the District average.
A committee of parents and staff looks at all academic test results and identifies specific goals and strategies to support and increase the academic learning of Schenk students.
Schenk has a fully equipped and networked computer lab. Students receive weekly computer instruction through the Academic Enrichment program. Computers are also used in the classrooms and the Library Media Center (LMC). Computers enhance and support learning across the curriculum. Schenk is developing its own home page.
The goal of Talented and Gifted (TAG) programming is to make certain K-12 students consistently have learning opportunities that are challenging, systematic and continuous based on learning profile, readiness and student interest.
Student learning experiences include a broad range of opportunities that pushes a student to their next level of challenge and allows them to develop their talents. TAG programming may occur in the classroom, or in other settings. TAG programming is determined by ongoing evaluation and assessment of individual student needs. Each school has TAG resource support for ongoing consultation.
Students receive art, music and physical education, which compliment academic learning and curriculum goals. Students in grades 4 and 5 may participate in the strings musical program.
A full range of special education options and services is available. Special education students are integrated into the regular education classrooms.
Schenk offers a full-day kindergarten, Reading Recovery and Title 1 Reading. The Student Council provides leadership training and promotes many student-generated activities. Schenk's Award Program promotes academic achievement, good citizenship, and attendance during school assemblies. In addition, support services are provided by the school nurse, psychologist, and social worker.

Adult supervision occurs on the playground, in the lunch room, in the hallways, and 15 minutes before school. The staff is actively involved in the safety program.
School Safety Patrols learn leadership skills and offer daily assistance to our younger students getting to and from home.
Our health office is on site and staffed during the school day.

The Parent Teacher Association is an integral partner in making Schenk a great learning environment. It meets monthly on Tuesday evenings in the LMC, and sponsors field trips, the annual spring dance, and buys computer and playground equipment.
Parent support and involvement are encouraged for all school committees.
Our school benefits from partnerships with many community agencies. Schenk participates in Joining Forces for Families, a joint effort with many community agencies to support families. Schenk has a VISTA volunteer coordinator through the Schools of Hope and many community members regularly mentor and tutor students. Call 204-1500 if you would like to help a child!
