LocationVan Hise Elementary is a quiet K-5 neighborhood school in the University Hill Farms area on the near west side of Madison. The campus is shared with Velma Hamilton Middle School. Class SizeAverage class size is 24. There are 14 classrooms with inclusion of students with Exceptional Educational Needs and English as a Second Language. Bus ServicePick-up for students begins at 8:00 a.m. at the following locations: 1) Wedgewood and Sherwood, 2) Sherwood and Dearholt, 3) Odana Lane and 5321 Fairway, 4) Fairway and Dearholt. Monthly payments by checks payable to Van Hise Eatery or the exact amount of money are accepted any school day. After School CareOn-site after school care for grades K-5 is available. Call After School at 276-9782 for more information. Academic ProgrammingAchievement ScoresOver recent years Van Hise Elementary Third Grade Reading Test scores have been between 97-100%. TechnologyOur computer lab was financed by our PTO. The computers are used to support and extend learning across the curriculum. Talented and Gifted (TAG) ProgramThe goal of Talented and Gifted (TAG) programming is to make certain K-12 students consistently have learning opportunities that are challenging, systematic and continuous based on learning profile, readiness and student interest. Student learning experiences include a broad range of opportunities that pushes a student to their next level of challenge and allows them to develop their talents. TAG programming may occur in the classroom, or on rare occasions in other settings. TAG programming is determined by ongoing evaluation and assessment of individual student needs. TAG consultation is available to school staff and families. Special ClassesTeacher specialists in art, LMC, music, and physical education provide regular instruction. Reinforcing and Enriching Achievement for all CHildren (REACH) extends and supports classroom curriculum by teaching computer instruction. Other ProgramsWe offer full-day kindergarten, special education services and English as a Second Language (ESL) programming. Support services are provided by the school nurse, psychologist, occupational/physical therapist, social worker, and speech and language clinician. School Climate
Safety Is Always A PriorityThe playground has adult supervision 15 minutes before school and during all recesses. Student patrols learn leadership skills and help maintain a positive school environment. City crossing guards assist students at busy intersections. Students who live more than 1.5 miles from school are provided free transportation on school buses. Peaceful Problem Solving and Conflict ResolutionTeachers and support staff develop and promote lifelong skills for successfully handling conflict. Verbal communication and problem solving, student to student, is the first course of action. PartnershipsFamily PartnershipsWe have an active Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) which supports academic programming by planning special events and fundraisers, advocating for children, and soliciting volunteers. The Board and/or PTO meetings are held every month on Tuesday evenings. Community PartnershipsOur school has been active with organizations such as the Golden Kiwanis and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). Students participate in community service projects by donating clothes, food, toys, and money to various Dane County organizations. University PartnershipsWe promote and provide quality teacher education for future teachers and ongoing learning for our professional staff. We have been partners with Edgewood College, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
