Over recent years Van Hise Elementary Third Grade Reading Test scores have been between 97-100%.
Our computer lab was financed by our PTO. The computers are used to support and extend learning across the curriculum.
The goal of Talented and Gifted (TAG) programming is to make certain K-12 students consistently have learning opportunities that are challenging, systematic and continuous based on learning profile, readiness and student interest.
Student learning experiences include a broad range of opportunities that pushes a student to their next level of challenge and allows them to develop their talents. TAG programming may occur in the classroom, or on rare occasions in other settings. TAG programming is determined by ongoing evaluation and assessment of individual student needs. TAG consultation is available to school staff and families.
Teacher specialists in art, LMC, music, and physical education provide regular instruction. Reinforcing and Enriching Achievement for all CHildren (REACH) extends and supports classroom curriculum by teaching computer instruction.
We offer full-day kindergarten, special education services and English as a Second Language (ESL) programming. Support services are provided by the school nurse, psychologist, occupational/physical therapist, social worker, and speech and language clinician.

The playground has adult supervision 15 minutes before school and during all recesses. Student patrols learn leadership skills and help maintain a positive school environment. City crossing guards assist students at busy intersections. Students who live more than 1.5 miles from school are provided free transportation on school buses.
Teachers and support staff develop and promote lifelong skills for successfully handling conflict. Verbal communication and problem solving, student to student, is the first course of action.

We have an active Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) which supports academic programming by planning special events and fundraisers, advocating for children, and soliciting volunteers. The Board and/or PTO meetings are held every month on Tuesday evenings.
Our school has been active with organizations such as the Golden Kiwanis and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). Students participate in community service projects by donating clothes, food, toys, and money to various Dane County organizations.
We promote and provide quality teacher education for future teachers and ongoing learning for our professional staff. We have been partners with Edgewood College, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
We invite parents and community members to share their talents and interests by assisting teachers with classroom projects and activities. This is the best way to become familiar with our school.
School tours of our building are available. We encourage anyone interested to call the school to set up a time.
We encourage you to talk with parents and guardians of our students to learn more about our school. Please see the Principal/Parent information on this web site for current names and phone numbers.
Questions can be answered and/or materials such as curriculum guides, handbooks, lunch menus, newsletters, etc. can be requested by contacting the school office at 204-4800; Fax your request to 204-0419.
