Madison's first new elementary school in over thirty years, César Chávez Elementary School now in its sixth year is currently Madison's 2nd largest elementary school with 640 students, but no matter how large we become we pledge to treat each child as an individual. The building is both beautiful and education-friendly. The classrooms are laid out in grade level pods that enable us to build a sense of community among classes. Our mission statement: Chávez Elementary School is an academic institution dedicated to developing the intellectual and creative abilities of our students. Ours is a collaborative effort among staff, students, families and our community to guide students to become knowledgeable and contributing citizens, able to make their way in this global society. Together with kindness, gentle good humor and respect for each other, we will foster a safe learning environment of joy and acceptance. |

Chávez is located in the far Southwestern portion of the city. However, it draws students not only from the surrounding neighborhood but also other sections of the city.
Chávez Elementary is one of Wisconsin's SAGE (Student Achievement Guarantee in Education) schools, a state grant that ensures that the average class size of Kindergarten and first grades are at 17:1 and the second and third grades have about the same ratio during the block scheduling for literacy and math during the day. For the other grades, the class ratio is approximately 23:1. Our multiage 4/5 classes have approximately 24:1 ratio.
Transportation is provided to students who don't live in the immediate vicinity, including students who formerly attended Orchard Ridge, Leopold, and Falk Elementary Schools as well as some students who live in the Allied Drive neighborhood.
Students have the option of bringing their lunch or buying a pre-packed hot lunch. Breakfast is also available. Before and after school care is provided on-site.

The integration of technology into the curriculum is an important part of the Chávez learning experience. Each classroom has five computers, one for the teacher and the others for students. In addition there is a printer in each class. All classes are hooked up to the Internet and it can be viewed over a TV that is provided for each class. There is also a computer lab, where all students receive weekly instruction, and there are 12 computers for student use in the LMC. In all areas we are striving to use technology to advance the educational process.
Technology/Computers is our REACH (Reinforcing and Enriching Achievement for all Children) program and on each week out students in 2nd-5th grades work in the computer lab on a variety of computer-related skills. Students in Kindergarten and 1st grade split their hour of REACH, with a 1/2 hour in the computer lab and the other 1/2 hour in the library discovering the joys of literacy and books. Literacy in all disciplines is a priority for our school.
Teacher specialists in art, music and physical education provide regular instruction. Fifth grade students also have the opportunity to participate in the strings program.
The goal of Talented and Gifted (TAG) programming is to make certain K-12 students consistently have learning opportunities that are challenging, systematic and continuous based on learning profile, readiness and student interest.
Student learning experiences include a broad range of opportunities that pushes a student to their next level of challenge and allows them to develop their talents. TAG programming may occur in the classroom, or in other settings. TAG programming is determined by ongoing evaluation and assessment of individual student needs. Each school has TAG resource support for ongoing consultation.
Chávez offers Reading Recovery, Special Education, and English as a Second Language (ESL) programs. Support services are provided by the occupational/physical therapists, psychologist, nurse, social worker, and speech & language clinician.

All of us -- students and staff -- work hard to make Chávez Elementary a safe, friendly and welcoming environment. The playground has adult supervision 15 minutes before school begins and during all recesses. Our 5th grade safety patrol helps out before and after school as well as during the lunch hour. A city-provided adult crossing guard helps students cross at our busiest intersection. Students who live more than 1.5 miles from school are provided free transportation on school buses. A nursing assistant is on site.
Chávez aims to be a positive place where students, staff, and parents feel good about the school and where important learning occurs. We will continue with the "Stop and Think" social skills program and start working on a school-wide positive behavior plan based on the work of Carwin Kronenberg model called "Above the Line" Behaviors. This model refers to student behaviors that contribute to a sense of community.

Our PTO is vibrant. The PTO works to provide a link between home, school and the district. It supports academic programming by planning special events and fundraisers advocating for our children and soliciting volunteers. The PTO meets the third Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in the LMC. All are welcome. If you need transportation, it will be arranged. Call Deb Kollberg at 442-2001.
Five years ago we started our student government and it has sponsored several events, such as "dress up days" and raising funds for the 2004 tsunami victims. The school government works for the betterment of the school and community.
All students are eligible for the "Principal's Award," which is given to students because they make our school a better place to learn, proving that one person can make a difference.
Together, working hard, we are making Chávez Elementary a great school for all students. Come visit our school, walk around and you'll see kids and adults working hard and doing it with enthusiasm as we build our learning community. Sure, we are going to encounter our share of problems but we are a school of problem-solvers. We'd love to have you visit us.
We encourage you to talk with parents of our students to learn more about our school. For answers to any questions or to request materials such as lunch menus, newsletters, parent handbook, etc., call the office at 442-2000 or fax your requests to 442-2100.
Remember, you're "At Home At Chávez Elementary School!"
