[Nuestro Mundo Community School]

At Nuestro Mundo we join with diverse families and the community to create a successful and unique learning environment through the use of dual language education and democratic decision-making. The child-centered, community-based and multicultural curriculum promotes high academic achievement in English and Spanish and prepares students to become active, global citizens. Site Characteristics

General Information

Nuestro Mundo is a free public charter school that will eventually serve children in grades K-5. Nuestro Mundo started in 2004-2005. In the 2007-2008 school year, we will serve kids in grades K-3. Nuestro Mundo, Inc. (NMI) is the organization that holds the charter school contract with the MMSD Board of Education. NMI is comprised of various members from the community that work to support the school in an effort to carry out the mission of the school.

Location

Nuestro Mundo is located on the far east side of Madison. We share a facility with Frank Allis Elementary School a K-5 elementary school.

Class Size

Our kindergarten and first grade classes average 15-19 students. Our second and third grade classes average 20-25 students. The classroom sizes will be similar for grades 4 and 5. Our current enrollment is 147.

Neighborhood Bus Service

Transportation to school is contracted through the RiteWay Transportation Company. Our school is also located close to many of the Madison Metro Bus Company stops. For issues and concerns please call Roy at 249-6462. Students outside the area must provide their own transportation.

Hot Lunch Program and After School Care

Students have the option of purchasing a prepacked hot lunch through the Food Service of the Madison Metropolitan School District. The menu is provided monthly with the option of buying hot lunch or bringing a meal from home. The Madison School & Community Recreation (MSCR) Safe Haven program currently has an after school program consisting of activities and clubs that both reinforce and enrich student learning in a safe environment.

Academic Programming

Achievement Scores

Nuestro Mundo students are administered the same assessments as other students in the MMSD. One difference is that some of these assessments are administered in Spanish to all students regardless of home language.

Technology

Technology is an integral part of education at Nuestro Mundo. All classrooms are computer equipped and 100% of the classrooms have at least three computers used daily by students and teachers. In addition, all students spend a minimum of 30 minutes on the computers in our computer lab, which has 27 newly refurbished computers.

Talented and Gifted (TAG) Program

Student learning experiences include a broad range of opportunities that pushes students to their next level of challenge and allows them to develop their talents. TAG programming may occur in the classroom, or in other settings. TAG programming is determined by ongoing evaluation and assessment of individual student needs. Each school has TAG resource support for ongoing consultation.

Special Classes

Our students receive instruction in the following special classes each week in English only throughout the year: art: 1 hour per week, music: 2 hours per week, physical education, 1 1/2 hours per week, REACH (Reinforcing and Enriching Achievement for All Children) technology and LMC: 1 hour per week.

Other Programs

Nuestro Mundo offers full day Kindergarten and special education. In addition, support services are provided by a school social worker, psychologist, nurse, speech and language clinicians and an instructional coach. Nuestro Mundo shares a Community Learning Center and Safe Have site with Frank Allis, allowing the school to be open to students after school for a variety of programs and opportunities.

School Climate

Safety Is Always A Priority

This year, along with the rest of the MMSD, Nuestro Mundo will be implementing a new program called “Above the Line.” Its goal is to teach students to live “Above the Line” in their behavior, academics, and every day interactions. Our goal is to help all students, teachers, and parents work together to live Above the Line.

We will also be using the Peaceful Playgrounds model to help our students play together safely and responsibly. Members of our staff spent many hours painting games onto our blacktop so they would be more colorful and inviting to our students. All of this work is in line with our newly purchased playground equipment that was installed in 2005. You are welcome to stop by and see what we’ve done!

Nuestro Mundo administers a survey to all parents at the end of each academic year. The information gathered from this survey provides the school with meaningful feedback for making forward progress.

Partnerships

Family Partnerships

Nuestro Mundo has the privilege of having a strong PTO organization. The PTO's work has assisted our school in educational funding, capital improvements and purchasing new playground equipment. Some of the events include the Fall Craft Fair, Taste of Allis and Carnivallis. The members are very active and represent the diverse population at Frank Allis.

In addition to the PTO organization Nuestro Mundo has a Site Leadership Council. The Site Leadership Council meets on a monthly basis and provides input concerning the direction of the school. Parents, teachers, the principal, and representatives from Nuestro Mundo, Inc. participate in this on-goings on this council.

Community Partnerships

Our school benefits from donated materials, financial support, and time from many organizations, including JFF (Joining Forces for Families). Volunteers with the VISTA program assist in several ways, ranging from helping kindergarten students in the computer lab to tutoring students individually or in small groups. These volunteers make a big difference!

You Are Always Welcome At Frank Allis Elementary School!

For answers to any questions, contact our school secretary at 204-1079.
