You're moving too and you are the one who will be in school all day.
So, just for you, here are some fun reasons why you will think our school
is the greatest!
We've surveyed our students on what they like about East High School. The following responses are typical:
Students like it here! When asked what makes the school a special place, an eleventh grade student commented: "It is impossible to be `friendless' at East." Another student reflected: "People smile a lot at East." A persistent theme: students say East is a school where they feel safe and accepted.
The faculty at East features teachers who have achieved local, state, and national recognition. Yet students seem especially impressed with the personal touch in the classroom. Responses such as these were frequent: "Teachers are easy to get along with - they go out of their way to show they care." "Teachers see students as people, too." "Teachers are willing to help you with your work if you don't understand - they are always available."
Students appreciate the wealth of resources available at
East. You can go on-line in our computerized Career Center to check out
colleges or explore occupations. You can work out in our weight room, enjoy
the indoor swimming pool, or shoot baskets in the gyms or field house. You
can learn horticulture in the school greenhouse or design and maintain the
gardens at the school farm.
Computers are available nearly everywhere in the building, and you will be able to elect courses that use computers as an integral part of the curriculum. Our library offers the most current information, including CD ROMs, computerized collections, periodical databases and, of course, the Internet. Resource centers offer students alternatives for places to study, or as one student observed: "East has plenty of places to read and work quietly."
"East feels like America" is the way one student put it. When you attend school at East, you become classmates with students from a variety of cultures and experiences. A strength of the school is that students learn to relate to peers they might not get to know otherwise. A junior commented: "People from different groups get along with one another." "You have a voice at East," reflected a senior.
The East program of studies booklet is crammed with over 230 course offerings! The hard part is making up your mind which classes are the best for you. You can choose from three foreign languages - Spanish, French, German - or you might select a course in painting, commercial art, or ceramics. If you are musically inclined, you have award winning programs in orchestra, band, or chorus. Courses in woodworking or drafting might be attractive, as well as exploring the 26 computerized stations in the Tech Center, where you could investigate robotics, compose and record music, monitor the weather, or work with fiber optics and lasers. You could prepare for the FAA pilot examination through our aviation program or earn certification as a nursing assistant in medical occupations.
You will also have many options in our academic courses, with accelerated course work offered in all departments. Elective courses in areas such as psychology, ethnic studies, creative writing, journalism, human anatomy, and advanced biology are available. East offers a comprehensive program - you'll be sure to find courses that meet your needs!
It's hard not to get involved at East. "I like the wide
variety of clubs that are supported by the teachers," commented one
student. Another lauded our outstanding athletic program: "I like the
opportunity to play on athletic teams as a freshman without getting cut and
the chance later on to play on a varsity team." "East is student-friendly,"
asserted a third student.
From Mock Trial to the Spanish Club to the KOJO drill team, student clubs are an important part of the social scene at East. You can take a leadership role in the Student Congresses or mentor elementary and middle school students in PEP (Peers Educating Peers). Honors organizations like the East Beta Scholars and National Honor Society are well-known for their community outreach. Fine arts programs such as our drama group and the forensics and debate teams are popular. Student art work is displayed in the Edwards Gallery. Clubs which encourage students to explore and celebrate their cultural heritage are active.
East students have numerous opportunities to be involved in the community. Many participate in ENJOY (East Neighbors Join Old and Young), a club that connects students to elderly people in the neighborhood. ENJOY students visit their elderly friends in their homes and help out with chores. Other students help plan our yearly community dinner by preparing a meal for the neighborhood in the East cafeteria. The Beta Scholars volunteer every year to ring bells for the Salvation Army during the holidays and raise money for those in need.
East strives to offer students a healthy blend of strong academics within a supportive environment. As one student observed: "East encourages higher learning and achievement without being overly competitive or stressful." "There are tutors available for students who need extra help," echoed another student.
"The architectural design is the most amazing in the city," admires a student. What do you like about East? Many students mentioned the school building itself. East is indeed a distinctive building, the school with the towers. The mall -"At lunch, the mall is a fun place to eat." The forum - "A comfortable place to relax with friends." Walking through the hallways - "The building is shaped like a horseshoe and it is very easy to get around."
"The age, the tradition," mentions a senior. It means something to be a "Purgolder." Students have discovered that East is an important part of the eastside community and that East graduates still care about the school. "I have gotten to know people who graduated many years ago," remarked a student. Another summed up his experience: "The pride and spirit stays with you."
