La Follette High School

The mission of La Follette High School, in collaboration with the entire community, is to challenge and prepare each student to become a contributing member of a rapidly changing and complex society by:

  • providing a relevant, diverse curriculum which meets the academic, social and emotional needs of each student;
  • creating a safe, cooperative, enjoyable, stimulating learning environment;
  • providing a variety of opportunities which enhance each student's unique talents and interests;
  • fostering the acquisition of self-knowledge for individual goal setting and career planning; and,
  • inspiring a sense of responsibility to self and others.

Unique to La Follette High School is the four block schedule, which includes four 90 minute classes each day, and four terms each year. This schedule provides students with more class options and additional time for in-depth study. Implemented in 1997, the four block program has increased student participation in advanced placement courses and enhanced the number of students achieving honor roll.

Academic Programming

Achievement Scores

Our test participation percentage went from 97% during the 2003-04 school year to 99% of the tenth grade students taking the Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Exam during this past school year. 67% of these students scored at the Proficient and Advanced Levels in reading while 65% scored at these same two levels in math. The most recent data available indicates that the average SAT scores where 554 for the verbal portion and 576 for the math portion of the test. The majority of La Follette's students take the ACT test on which the Madison School District has consistently scored above both the state and national averages. During the 2004-05 school year, 65% of the junior class took this test with a composite average of 21.8.

Graduation Requirements

Core graduation requirements include: 4 credits of English, 3 of social studies, 2 of math, 2 of science, 1.5 of physical education, .5 of health and .5 of computer literacy. Students meet additional credit requirements by choosing between two elective options that include fine arts, School-to-Work courses and foreign language. Students must have a total of 26 credits to graduate.

Honors And Accelerated Courses

Accelerated and advanced placement courses cover a wide variety of subjects, including English, Spanish, Math, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, American History, Calculus, Computer Science and more. Advanced placement or honors courses have weighted grades identified with asterisks on student transcripts.

Algebra/Reading Core Success

Beginning with the 2005-06 school year, students who need additional help with Algebra and reading/writing skills will be able to receive supplemental instruction in these two areas. The semester course, taken concurrently with Algebra I, will provide 45 minutes of daily instruction in math and 45 minutes of daily instruction in reading/writing skills. If students need additional support in only one of these areas, they will be scheduled in the Lancer Learnign Center for the remaining 45 minutes of this block.

Technology

La Follette High School is the only Madison public high school with a computer literacy graduation requirement. Many other technology-based courses are available in graphics, programming, applications and communications.

Talented and Gifted (TAG) Program

The goal of Talented and Gifted (TAG) programming is to make certain K-12 students consistently have learning opportunities that are challenging, systematic and continuous based on learning profile, readiness and student interest.

Student learning experiences include a broad range of opportunities that pushes a student to their next level of challenge and allows them to develop their talents. TAG programming may occur in the classroom, or in other settings. TAG programming is determined by ongoing evaluation and assessment of individual student needs. Each school has TAG resource support for ongoing consultation.

English Language Learners

La Follette, like many other schools in the Madison Metropolitan School District, has seen an increase in the number of students who have English as a second language. These students are supported via placement in a variety of classes that best meet their English needs. Spanish and Hmong Bilingual Resource Specialists are available to assist students, parents, and staff.

Read 180

During the 2003-04 school year, grant and budget resources were used to secure this proven reading program (Scholastic, Inc.). It is designed to help high school students who are reading 2 or more years below grade level. Students are actively involved in an interactive computer program, independent reading, and small group instruction. The title, "Read 180," promises a brighter reading future by "turning the student's life around."
