Site Characteristics

Location

Toki is located in the Orchard Ridge school complex on approximately 15 acres of land. A residential neighborhood and a forest habitat study area surround the property. Toki shares the school complex with Orchard Ridge Elementary School. Whitney Way and Raymond Road are the two nearest major streets.

Class Size

Toki has eight sections of sixth grade, eight sections of seventh grade, and eight sections of eighth grade. Students are housed in teams -- four teams at sixth grade, and two teams each at seventh and eighth grade. Toki enrolls just over 625 students.

Neighborhood Bus Service

School transportation is provided by Madison Metro on special Toki school routes. These routes serve the entire attendance area and students use the routes like regular transit buses. There is a fare charged to bus users, and pre-paid passes and tickets are available. A late bus route allows student transport for after school activities and sports.

Hot Lunch Program

Toki offers breakfast and a variety of meal options, packaged and a la carte, for lunch including pizza, burritos, and subs. A separate lunch period is available at each grade level.

After School Activities

There are numerous after-school groups and activities at Toki, many under the sponsorship of MSCR. Included in these is a homework club with teacher help and an opportunity for students to complete homework before returning home.

Also included are several opportunities for competitive athletics. The staff is always open to initiating new activities based on student interests.

The YMCA runs an after school program for younger children on Toki school grounds.

Academic Programming

Core Academic Subjects

Math, science, language arts, and social studies are the required core academic subjects at Toki as well as world language (Spanish and French) for seventh and eighth graders. Sixth grade students study developmental guidance and computer applications.

Algebra 1A (ninth grade offering) is an additional option in eighth grade.

Technology

Toki has at least one student-dedicated networked computer per classroom as well as a computer lab. There is one award-winning technology classroom at Toki that offers a variety of computer and technology applications. A technology upgrade enables the use of up to ten student computers per classroom.

Talented and Gifted (TAG) Program

The goal of Talented and Gifted (TAG) programming is to ensure that students consistently have learning opportunities that are challenging, systematic and continuous based on learning profile, readiness and student interest.

Student learning experiences include a broad range of opportunities that pushes students to their next level of challenge and allows them to develop their talents. TAG programming may occur in the classroom or in other settings. TAG programming is determined by ongoing evaluation and assessment of individual student needs.

Unified Arts Program

Toki's unified arts programs have consistently been recognized as exemplary by the district and state education agencies. Students rotate through instruction in family and consumer education, art, technology education, computer applications, and physical education. Toki's music programs (choral, instrumental, and orchestral) consistently place high in local and state music competitions.

Exceptional Education Needs

Staff is committed to meeting the needs of different learners and students with special and exceptional needs, including ED, LD, CD, PT, OT, S&L. A skilled team of support staff and special educators offer a full continuum of services to students with disabilities and special needs to make their experience at Toki successful.

Toki is committed to inclusion in the classroom.

School Climate

Safety Is Always A Priority

Toki Middle School is a safe learning environment. The school administration strictly follows the guidelines and policies of the district's Conduct and Discipline Plan. Structures exist within the school so potentially disruptive behaviors of one student do not have a negative impact on others. Counselors and support staff (psychologist, social worker) and administrators with high expectations for positive conduct work through individual issues that may affect performance.

Toki Middle School is a caring community where our goal is that everyone is respected, feels safe, and has a sense of belonging. We have a shared belief that kindness and respect for each other is of great value in our school (and in our lives!). It contributes to a positive environment for better learning and academic performance. "Bullyproofing Your School" is our comprehensive middle school approach to addressing bullying and harassing behaviors among students. The program is designed to create a positive, pro-social school climate. Students will learn how they can make a difference - they can have a hand in developing a caring majority at Toki - A Caring Community!

High Achievement

Toki recognizes students who achieve at a high level. Students who are recipients of high honors (GPA of 3.75 or higher) are recognized quarterly at a parent/staff/student breakfast.

Partnerships

Family Partnerships

Toki's parents are important contributing members of the school community. It is common to see parents volunteering in the office, tutoring individual students, accompanying field trips, chaperoning school dances or leading after school recreation groups. Toki's PTO is an active supporter of school programs including planning and running the talent show, magazine sale, picture day, registration, eighth grade completion activities, publishing newsletter and student directory, etc. The PTO fundraiser supports financial assistance, Bridgework performance, cultural performances and many other needs at Toki M.S.

Community Partnerships

Toki M.S. has been fortunate to form partnerships with UW-Madison, Edgewood College, Centro Hispano, 100 Black Men, Urban League, Delta Academy, PEOPLE Program and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church which provides space when needed and safe harbor for evacuation needs.
