Just For Students... Jefferson Middle School

You're...At Home At
Jefferson Middle School!

At Home In Madison

Why should adults get all the information?!
You're moving too and you are the one who will be in school all day.
So, just for you, here are some fun reasons why you will think our school is the greatest!

David Letterman made "Top Ten" lists famous. So, this is just for you, kids.

10. Plus Trips

The "PLUS" stands for: Positive Learners Understand Success. It's true! Students at Jefferson earn quarterly all grade field trips to celebrate successful academic achievement. Four times a year, teachers round up their students for a trip to bowling, movies, roller skating and more! PLUS trips are excellent motivators (say the teachers) and really cool (say the students).

9. Wednesday Popcorn

Hungry? If it's Wednesday, you're in luck. The Jefferson Student Organization sponsors "Wednesday Popcorn." A bag for only 50 cents, and it's great. JSO reps do the popping and selling, and best of all, funds raised from the sales go right back to our school.

8. Special Performances

We get lots of guest speakers and special performances all year round. Some of the special performances are from our own school like a special project where a group of eighth grade girls put on a show about very important women in history. Teachers are always bringing in people from all around Madison to talk with us. The Mayor was even here this year!

7. School Clubs

Horseback riding, skiing, art, bowling, computers, drill team, magic cards, Odyssey of the Mind, all about dogs, yearbook, photography and remote control cars. These and lots more, depending on our interests, are some of the clubs available at Jefferson after school.

6. Overnights

Hey, have you ever gone winter hiking and camping? Have you ever helped prepare a meal for 100 hungry sixth graders? Well, these experiences are available at Jefferson. Students at all grades may plan overnight field trips. These are some of our most memorable times! Upham Woods, School Forest and Bethal Horizons are all places we've enjoyed. And it doesn't even matter if you stay up all night. The next day you can go home and sleep because you have the afternoon off!

5. Ropes Course and Project Adventure Activities

We're lucky to have a ropes course (that's climbing on high scary stuff) right in the gym. It's a very cool activity that you can do in gym class and with your sixth grade homeroom teacher. We work a lot first on doing special things to build trust and learn to work on problems like a team. Then we're ready for the high ropes climbing. In seventh grade you get to go to the outdoors ropes course for even more challenges.

4. User Friendly Staff

Teachers at Jefferson really like kids. You can tell because they are always doing something special for us. If you have questions or a problem, they will help you out, or find someone who can. Teachers make sure that students get different and special opportunities. They do things after school, in the evening, and on weekends with us. There are people all over the building to help us, in the office, the cafeteria, the computer lab and the LMC.

3. PEP

In sixth grade, all students get to have a special "PEP" teacher. PEP stands for Pupil Esteem Program, a small group of kids and one teacher. We work on things like developing trust and respect for one another. We do a lot of project adventure activities like "Sherpa Walks" - that's when you are blind-folded and you walk around the school in a line together. We also get to do the ropes course again in PEP.

2. Spotlight Awards

Once a month there is a special pizza party for about forty students. Teachers or other people at school can nominate you for getting this award. Besides the pizza party, you get coupons for other free stuff. It's pretty cool because you're getting something special for just doing what you're supposed to do. Sometimes kids get Spotlight Awards because they have done "an act of kindness" that someone noticed. Other kids get Spotlight Awards because they have achieved a personal goal.

1. Follies Las Vegas

What?! You don't know what the Jefferson Follies are? Let us tell you that this is the best show of talent anywhere in Madison! Where else but the Jefferson Follies do you have over 200 kids and adults performing an opening dance act or a grand finale? Parents, teachers and tons of kids do acts. There is singing, dancing, gymnastics, comedy, music and much more! Both nights of the performances are always sold out. This is one of the biggest things Jefferson does. Almost everyone gets to be involved. Some who don't want to perform help with stage crew. Even if you don't want to be part of the Follies, you can be part of the audience. It's a great show!

This top 10 list was written by students in the Jefferson Student Organization, with the help of our Home-School Coordinator.

Remember, you're "At Home At Jefferson Middle School!"
