The Centro Bilingüe de Educación Alternativa provides an opportunity for Spanish-speaking
students, aged 16-19, to receive course content as well as language
instruction in Spanish and English. Students must be currently enrolled in high
school. The program exists for students who are not regularly attending their high
school because of work and family responsibilities. Students who attend the Centro
Bilingüe de Educación Alternativa will be able to earn high school credit while
developing academic, job, and English skills in preparation for transitioning to their
next educational or work environment. Students may be able to earn some credit
for their work experience. Instruction will be conducted in both Spanish and English.
Classes are arranged to accommodate work schedules and to allow students to
attend to the needs of their families.
Students typically transition out of the Centro Bilingüe de Educación Alternativa
when they have met any of the following requirements:
- Earned the requisite credits to transfer to another program
- Achieved improved literacy in English (3 or above on the DPI scale)
- Completed a plan to move onto another appropriate educational or work environment
The Centro Bilingüe de Educación Alternativa is a joint project of ESL and Alternative
Programs of the Madison Metropolitan School District.
