MMSD Alternative Programs:
A Continuum of Learning Environments

To meet the goal of "100 percent graduation," the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) needs to provide a mix of educational choices as diverse as the students and families it serves. The Alternative Education system is designed to give a wider range of appropriate education options to students. These alternatives provide a continuum of choices that allow students to develop skills and successfully transition to their next learning environment, whether that is a regular education classroom, another alternative, a post-secondary program, or the adult working world.

Special education students are eligible to attend any of the MMSD Alternative Programs. These students must meet eligibility criteria like any other student and go through the appropriate referral process. An IEP committee needs to recommend a change of placement before the student can begin to attend. Some programs are designated for special education students only, court system only, are specific to a high school attendance area or have some other specialized criteria. All programs have an entrance procedure.

We encourage members of our educational community, including MMSD staff, students, and parents, to explore the options we offer. This Guide is part of our efforts to increase awareness of the options available. Together, we can work towards the success of all students.

If you have any comments or questions about the information listed in this Guide, please contact program staff directly.
