Within MMSD, Assistive Technology (AT) is any item, piece of equipment or device that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of a student with a disability.

The need for Assistive Technology can be considered at an IEP meeting after the PLOP has been written and appropriate goals/objectives have been developed.

In the Madison Metropolitan School District, best practices would include using curricular strategies/modifications, or adaptive teaching techniques to meet the needs of the student.  If this is not successful, then staff should look at adaptations, modifications and/or accommodations which enable a student to participate in their educational program (low tech).  There may be the need to explore mid-tech or high tech equipment; however, this would require  following the district's procedures for supplying supporting documentation and assessment data.
