Duties of the High School Athletic Director

  1. Basic Function

    Assumes major responsibility for efficient administration of the high school athletic program.

    Reports to high school principal on matters related to the school athletic program.

  2. Position Responsibilities

    1. WIAA
      1. Verifies athletic eligibility.
      2. Requests sanction for contest as needed.
      3. Responsible for WIAA follow-up interpretation and dissemination of information.
    2. Game Preparation
      1. Coordinates transportation for athletic teams.
      2. Contracts officials for appropriate athletic contests.
      3. Recruits and assigns personnel to work as ticket sellers, ticket takers, crowd supervisors, scorers, timers, announcers and for other game management duties as needed.
      4. initiates requisitions for the issuance of checks for officials, supervisory personnel, transportation and entry fees.
      5. Reviews crowd control assignments with all supervisors, including police officers.
    3. Game management - Coordinates game management for all home athletic contests with contest workers, building administrators, contest officials and police personnel.
    4. Budget and Purchasing
      1. Is responsible for planning the athletic budget.
      2. Counter-signs all requests for purchase of athletic equipment and supplies.
      3. Ensures implementation of an efficient system for equipment acquisition, destruction, repair, custody and inventory.
    5. Scheduling
      1. Reviews all athletic schedules and submits recommendations to the principal.
      2. Secures permits for the use of practice and game facilities and coordinates with the physical education department chair, the Office of School-Community Recreation and the District Athletic Coordinator.
    6. General
      1. Publishes or announces athletic events to inform student body of coming events.
      2. Corresponds with other schools and the WIAA as necessary for the conduct of the program.
      3. Represents the high school principal at required meetings. (Big 8 Conference meetings, City Athletic Directors, WIAA, etc.)
      4. Coordinates award presentations at the local school programs.
      5. Makes recommendations to the principal for coaching assignments.
      6. Works with coaches and school administrators to publish, implement and update coaches handbooks and athletic codes.
      7. Convenes local school athletic board or council to deliberate various athletic matters.
