Before the May 2005 referendum, the Board of Education's Long Range Planning Committee began developing plans for Long Range Planning Task Forces. It was felt that regardless of the results of the May 24 referendum, the Board and the community had to address inadequate space for students in some schools, and significant availability of space in others.
It was decided that two separate task forces would be needed: one for the West-Memorial attendance area, and another for the East attendance area. The Long Range Planning Committee chose to create task forces comprised of community citizens, a representative of each school in the attendance area, and a few administrators. The Committee also developed the charges for the task forces, the process, and the timelines specifically to have the task forces' earliest preliminary recommendations to the Board of Education in December, and the final recommendations to the Board in January 2006.
The Board of Education formally approved the task forces at its August 8 meeting. Board members were encouraged to submit their nominations for the task forces, with the understanding that Committee Chair Bill Keys and Board President Carol Carstensen would discuss these nominations. The actual appointments to the task forces would be the responsibility of the President.
