Carstensen began with a review of the goals for the Budget Seminar - to provide more detailed information about the district's budget and help community members acquire a more extensive knowledge of the budget. She then had everyone write down their estimates of the number of administrators in the district and the starting salary of new teachers. The estimates of administrators ranged from 40 to 500; salary estimates ranged from $18,000 to $34,000. Carstensen gave the accurate figures: 144 administrators; starting salary of $29,040. She then handed out material on staffing numbers, copies of the monthly budget report, the strategic plan brochure and a chart of enrollment numbers and special education student numbers. There was discussion about the number of students served in private schools. Carstensen promised to get those figures also.
Carstensen presented overhead transparencies detailing the budget parts for the district's general administration. She explained that the salary figures included the cost of fringe benefits. There was a request to get average salaries for different classifications and the cost of fringes.
Carstensen began the presentation of the Elementary School Department but only got as far as the initial organization chart. She spent time responding to questions explaining SAGE and the Federal Class Size Reduction funds.
FOLLOW UP: Information requested for next week: 1) number of special education students in private schools; 2) number of Title I students in private schools; 3) average salary and fringe costs by job category.
No discussion.
The meeting adjourned at 8:55 p.m. by the unanimous consent of those present.
