4. Elvehjem Playground and Fundraising Efforts

PTO representatives Kelly Betsinger and Darcy Burke gave an update on the Elvehjem Dreams Big project to raise funds for a boundless playground.  After they placed third in a national essay competition for a playground, which would be the first in the State of Wisconsin, they decided to go ahead and raise the funds.  They shared their work in writing grants, sponsoring projects, building alliances, and receiving in-kind services.  Art Rainwater and Sue Ann Thompson have agreed to be Honorary Co-Chairs. Their goal is to raise the amount they need by 8/8/08, and they feel they will meet that goal.  They summarized that Madison is a great city, with a great school district for families of children with special needs.  This playground and the way it is being supported is a natural extension.

Art Rainwater added that, in addition to being accessible to all students, this playground provides for parallel play.  It would be a wonderful playground model and community partnerships model to replicate in schools with similar populations.

The committee asked that Elvehjem Dreams Big continue to provide progress reports.

5.         Defining Partnerships

(Materials provided in advance of the meeting:  Partnerships Definition dated 12/03/07.  Materials provided at the meeting:  Community Partnerships update dated 12/10/07 - all attached to the original copy of these minutes.)

Lisa Black reviewed the draft definition, provided in written form, and gave a short history of how it was developed.  She noted that three categories of partnerships were identified - MMSD as the grantor, school/community, and support/advisory groups.  Examples were provided of organizations that would fit each category.  Kathy Price shared information about her position as Community Partnerships Coordinator with the district and her history with partnerships, including goals and key projects, liaisons, and involvement.  She also provided a list of characteristics of successful school and community partnerships.

            DISCUSSION:

· Ways that individuals interested in supporting schools can be connected with the district (large part of the overall Schools of Hope project).

· Consider PLATO as an organization from which to recruit volunteers.

Maya Cole asked that the proposed definition incorporate some of the wording from the definition she proposed at the November 5 meeting:  begin with "A MMSD partnership," incorporate "the pooling of resources by different agents, whether these are public or private, collective or individual."

It was moved by Carl Silverman and seconded by Amy Hilgendorf to adopt the definition of partnerships as presented.

It was clarified that the Partnership Categories would not be part of the definition; that they are provided as clarification.

Lucy Mathiak requested that a fourth category be considered - School/Individual and that examples would be parents, families, neighbors, and university students.

It was moved by Lucy Mathiak and seconded by Carl Silverman to table the motion to adopt the definition of partnerships until revisions suggested at this meeting can be incorporated and the committee can review the revised proposed definition at the next meeting.  Motion unanimously carried.

6.         Board Policy 4500 - Parent Involvement

(Written materials provided in advance of the meeting:  Parent involvement board policies from the Oshkosh Area School District, Eau Claire Area School District, and Kenosha Unified School District - attached to the original of these minutes.)

Discussion was postponed because of the lack of time.  Ms. Cole asked that committee members review the documents presented and send her any questions or comments.

7.         Other Business

There was no other business.

8.         Adjournment

It was moved by Johnny Winston, Jr.  and seconded by Amy Hilgendorf to adjourn the meeting at 6:38 p.m.  Motion unanimously carried.
