2. Public Appearances
Melania Alvarez - Many parents are contacting her to say that the mathematics program in the schools is not working. There is no evidence that supports that they are better than other programs. She cited a National Academy of Sciences report on the quality of the evaluations of mathematics curriculum materials supported by the National Science Foundation (attached to the original of these minutes). There will be a big difference in the success rate of students who are able to get outside help and those who are not. Programs need to be assessed in a consistent manner. Only new teachers requested change in the math program; experienced teachers were happy with the curricula that were in place before.
3. Announcements
There were no announcements.
4. Research Base Underlying MadisonMetropolitanSchool DistrictMathematics Curriculum and Instruction
(Written materials provided – Research Base Underlying MMSD Mathematics Curriculum and Instruction: The Importance of Teaching for Understanding with Selected Bibliography, attached to the original of these minutes.)
Mary Ramberg introduced a presentation that included information about the goal of mathematics instruction and key ideas found in research about teaching mathematics that converge on student understanding: What students need to understand, what teachers must learn and do, and the use of curriculum materials that are aligned with standards, teaching practices and the learning needs of students. Presenters were Mary Ramberg and Math Resource Teachers Mar Jensen, Faye Hilgart and Linda McQuillen. Other members of the Math Team were present and answered questions, many of which were about the need for collecting and using data. Mary Ramberg noted a future source of information may be the report cards which are criterion-referenced by grade level and based on the standards.
REQUEST FOR INFORMATION: Data that shows progress is being made with disaggregated groups. Any information that can be provided about the WKCE tests and subgroups for the last two years.
