Performance and Achievement Committee meeting was called to order by Carol Carstensen at 5 p.m.

1. Approval of Minutes
It was moved by Ruth Robarts and seconded by Carol Carstensen to approve the Performance and Achievement Committee minutes dated December 18, 2006. Motion unanimously carried by those present.
2. Public Appearances
There were no public appearances.
3. Announcements
There were no announcements, but Ms. Carstensen noted Shwaw Vang is absent this evening due to a death in his family.
4. Math Masters Grant Program

Lisa Wachtel noted the information that will be presented represents the work thus far on a collaborative project between the school district and university math and engineering departments to design professional development addressing middle school teacher content knowledge in mathematics. Brian Sniff, district Mathematics Coordinator, and Terry Millar, UW Assistant Dean - Graduate School, Mathematics, described the project and the work that has been completed. Professor Millar noted the benefits of this project for university faculty members who participated and the value of having mathematicians involved in a project like this at the middle school level.
Courses will be offered again in the spring and there is a plan to involve all middle school teachers during the school day who have not participated in the elective classes, and planning beyond that to include teachers in grades 3-5. As a result of this work, the university has formed a joint committee with the School of Education and MMSD to redesign a new course for future middle school teachers and suggest to the DPI that licensing requirements should be changed for future teachers and the university is ready to provide the needed training.
Art Rainwater noted one of his goals for the coming year is to review the math curriculum and determine whether it meets the needs of children. The university and district feel that the work that results from this review will have far reaching impact and have begun to work together to seek a grant from the National Science Foundation to do a broad, in-depth study of the district's instructional framework for mathematics which could become an important national level case study.
DISCUSSION:
· Remuneration for teachers (payment or tuition credits). Schedule for the sessions in the spring. What has been learned from the pre- and post-tests. Teacher learning expectations compared with student learning expectations. Using the collective bargaining agreement as a mechanism to assure more teachers take learning opportunities.
· Benefits to university professors to understanding pedagogy and working together with teachers. Positive feedback received from professors.
