I. Call to Order
II. Frank Kelly and Freddie Adelson food policy presentation
a. Snack machines taken out until district figures out approved foods
i. Revenue issues with snack machines
ii. Harder to convince companies to provide a selection of non-restricted foods
b. Information sheets provided
i. MMSD Guidelines for Safe Food Handling, Parties and Celebrations at School
ii. Questions and Answers on the Nutrition Standards of the Wellness Policy
iii. Wellness Policy on Physical Activity and Nutrition
III. Shabazz Presentation
a. 140 students, 50 minute lunch
b. No lunch program, but kitchen
c. Community lunch (cook food at school, collect donations)
d. Not many places for Shabazz students to find lunch
e. Money
is a concern if students decide to go off campus for lunch
Idea: create a class that provides a community lunch every day that cooks for the entire school
i. Would like to propose a grant
ii. Class would adhere to the food guidelines as articulated in the food policy
iii. Shabazz curriculum has a service learning component
Concerns:
i. No vegetarian options available
ii. Conflicts at Sherman because middle school and high school students eat at the same time
iii. Feasibility of Shabazz cooking class (financial issues, legalities, etc.)
Solutions:
i. Find a way for Shabazz students to eat in Sherman cafeteria without the middle school students
ii. Involve administrators in solving Shabazz lunch issues
iii. Figure out how to offer vegetarian options to students (daily)
iv. Student Senate will write a statement that supports the Shabazz efforts to:
1. implement a community cooking class
2. create a time for Shabazz students to go to Sherman and receive the district lunch without the presence of the middle school students
3. receive funding equivalent to that which is currently offered to other district cooking class
Statement of Support for Shabazz
We, the Student Senate of the Madison Metropolitan School District, support the students of Shabazz High School in their pursuit of the following:
As short-term solutions:
As a long-term solution, Student Senate supports the development of a service learning cooking class that would provide an alternative daily lunch option to the students at Shabazz.
**For April or May agenda: review guidelines for next year's food guidelines and make suggestions as a Senate.
