Student Senate Website

Student web site created by a web design course at West High School was demonstrated by Jacinth.  It will go to the district staff for approval.

ShabazzHigh SchoolFood Service/Lunch Program Update

It was determined that several of the ideas suggested at the earlier meetings this school year have not been successfully implemented.  In particular the meeting between the Shabazz High School and Sherman Middle School principals has not taken place.  The idea for the meeting was to negotiate an adjustment in the school day schedule to accommodate the desire to have time for Shabazz students in the lunch room without middle school students being present.  Joe will follow up with communications to the affected principals, Frank Kelly, and Pam Nash.

Board Liaison Update

Joe and Jacinth attended a parent meeting of talented and gifted students to discuss the homogeneous vs. heterogeneous class composition issue.  The group was pleased that a student group was weighing in on the issue.

There is a group proposing a new studio school charter model.  The administration recommends not approving this due to the costs and associated cuts needed elsewhere in the budget, and also a lack of research based results on the model's effectiveness.  The Board has asked the administration to work with the charter school group to review where things can be agreed to, with an overriding decision being a cost neutral basis.

School Board will be addressing the budget in April and May.  Joe reported that the Student Senate will have the opportunity to weigh in on their priorities.

Expulsion Policy Issues

Work groups reviewed the existing Board of Education policies regarding expulsions including expungements.
