OPEN SESSION - WORKSHOP

1.        Approval of Minutes

It was moved by Maya Cole and seconded by Lucy Mathiak to approve the minutes of the Special meetings in open session dated November 19, December 10, and December 17, 2007 as distributed.  Motion unanimously carried.

2.        Clarifying Superintendent Candidate Interview Schedule

(Packets included a draft itinerary.  A copy is attached to the original of these minutes.)

The draft itinerary covered the schedule for the three candidates on January 22, 23, and 24 during the day with dinner and interviews with the Board in the evening.

            Discussion:

· Striking a balance between creating more chances for others to meet the candidates (e.g., county executive, mayor, Leslie Howard, UW chancellor or Dean of School of Education, active parents, retired staff, retired board members, etc.) for purposes of giving feedback to the Board vs. selling the district to them.

· Extend the community reception time by one-half hour (start at 4 p.m.)

· Send out invitations to those who got the superintendent survey.

· Instead of having "open time for candidates," offer them several alternatives (e.g., finance people, curriculum people, MTI, etc.).  Should be choice time rather than open time.

· Would also like them to meet with the principal of the Alternative Programs.

· Mary Gulbrandsen and/or Martha Vukelich-Austin will be showing them around.

· Extend invitation to their spouse or significant other.

· Important that invitations come from the Board and not the district.

· Include areas of Wexford Ridge, Allied Drive, or Memorial?

· Board candidates part of the interview process or part of this process?  Reluctant; complicated.

· Pass the itinerary by the consultants.

· Better to have some food in the way of beverages and snacks.

· Try to get some high school musicians for the reception.  Board can attend because it is a social event.

· Useful to have candidates' statements to the press taped.

· Can continue discussion on Saturday about the itinerary.

FOLLOW UP:  Administration will make the changes to the itinerary for Saturday's meeting.

3.        Other Business

            There was no other business.
