Minutes for Special Meeting - Open Session

Special meeting was called to order by President Arlene Silveira at 6:02 p.m.

MEMBERS PRESENT:                             Maya Cole, Lucy Mathiak, Beth Moss, Arlene Silveira

                                                         Board members-elect Ed Hughes and Marjorie Passman

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE PRESENT:   None

MEMBERS ABSENT:                               Carol Carstensen, Lawrie Kobza, Johnny Winston, Jr.

STAFF PRESENT:                                  Sue Allen, Steve Hartley, Art Rainwater, Howard Sampson, Ken Syke, Donna Williams, Barbara Lehman-Recording Secretary

1.         Public Hearing on the 2008-2009 Proposed MMSD Budget

            (Written materials provided:   2008-09 Budget and District Profile Executive Summary (4/08).  A copy is attached to the original of these minutes.)

            Don Severson, Active Citizens for Education, suggested that funds be reallocated to improving achievement, particularly in reading, math, and literacy and focusing in and targeting pupils who have those needs.  He felt that such a focus would lead to more success for students and better behavior and would lead to more community, parental, and business support for the schools. 

            Ben Senson, Memorial teacher, gave an overview of the Badgerbots robotics program, how it has grown, and their space issues.

            The hearing ended by unanimous consent at 6:08 p.m.
