Regular monthly meetings of the Board of Education are close captioned. They are shown again on Tuesday evenings with captions for those unable to watch on Monday evenings.
The Superintendent described the Goodman Rotary Senior Fitness Program which began in 1994 through a partnership with Bob and Irwin Goodman, the Rotary Foundation and the MMSD. MSCR Director Lucy Chaffin distributed information and introduced a group of seniors and their teacher who demonstrated two square dances.
Lapham Title 1 Reading Teacher Sandy Blume invited the Board to hear a lecture by Dr. G. Reid Lyon from the National Institutes of Child Health and Human Development, National Institutes of Health, Washington DC.

Performance & Achievement: Recommendations from the Selection of Program Materials Committee were approved.
Budget and Finance: The 1999-2000 Budget was approved with an expenditure level of $253,025,758 and a tax levy of $167,251,963. Recommendations were tabled that the administration provide options for helping finance new playground equipment for Sandburg and providing information on how many schools are facing similar situations and would be expected to make requests for funding. The recommendation was tabled to approve expenditure of $14,000 to finance playground equipment for Sandburg. Bids were approved for boiler room pipe insulation at East, asbestos abatement at Midvale, materials and labor for a replacement switchboard at Midvale, greenhouse replacement work at East, and burner replacement at West.

Board of Education/Common Council Liaison Committee: No report.
Legislative: The committee reviewed possible legislative priorities and received an update on state budget deliberations. Citizen members George Young and Anare Holmes will be leaving the committee.
Auditing: Interim and Building Fund bills were paid.
Purchasing: Bids were approved for art supplies for Central Stores, for the lease of a Xerox DocuTech for the Printing Department, and for singlefold and roll paper towels for Central Stores.
Transfers: $4,038 was transferred from the school formula account to support staffing of a 0.24 Family Community Liaison at Lapham Elementary School.
Other Financial Transactions: All donations and grants received since June 7, 1999 were approved. A resolution was adopted to authorize the temporary borrowing of $7,000,000 and a bid accepted in this amount. The 1999-00 budget was increased by $100,000 to support the Middle School Technology Project: "Mightier Than The Pen: Writing to the World."

Changes were made to the Madison-Verona boundary agreement. An addendum was approved to the Madison-Middleton boundary agreement. A resolution and order was approved detaching certain land from the MMSD and attaching it to the Middleton-Cross Plains School District. A resolution was approved ordering the attachment of the Doerfer Annexation to the MMSD and the detachment of it from the Verona Area School District and an order was issued altering school district boundary lines. A resolution was approved ordering the attachment of the Hanzel-Maurer annexation to the MMSD and the detachment of it from the Verona Area School District and an order was issued to alter school district boundary lines. Resolutions were approved ordering the attachment of part of the Hawk's Landing annexation and the other part of the Hawk's Landing annexation to the MMSD and the detachment of them from the Verona Area School District and orders were issued to alter school district boundary lines. A resolution was approved ordering the attachment of the Midtown annexation to the MMSD and detaching it from the Verona Area School District and an order was issued to alter school district boundary lines. A resolution was approved ordering the attachment of the UW land north and south of Mineral Point Road and West of County Highway M to the MMSD and the detachment of it from the Middleton Area School District and an order was issued to alter school district boundary lines. A resolution was approved ordering the attachment of Elver Park and the Menard's Development east of County Highway M and immediately north of Holy Name Catholic Center to the MMSD and the detachment of it from the Middleton Area School District and an order was issued to alter school district boundary lines.
Forty-six students were granted diplomas. The auditorium at Memorial High School was named the Thomas E. Buchhauser Auditorium. Hearing Examiners were appointed to hear expulsion cases for the 1999-00 school year: Howard S. Bellman, Norma Briggs, Richard Cates, Cheryl Furstace Daniels, Joseph D. Hill, David B. Nance, Henry E. Sanders. Citizens were appointed to serve on the MSCR Advisory Committee: Donald J. Dean and Neil Howell.
Old and New Business: Two new appointees to the MSCR Advisory Committee were carefully chosen and will do a great job.
