Since over 25% of the cuts in the worst case scenario would be from Educational Services, which includes both Special Education and English As A Second Language, we have been asked about what the impact would be on these two areas if the June 3 referendum fails.
In response, the Director of Educational Services has summarized what the three most significant reductions would be and what these would mean to the schools or students. This is if the worst case scenario happens (referendum fails and no state revenue limit increase.)
FTE = Full Time Equivalent, or a full time job position; for example, 0.5 FTE = half the hours in a full time job.
IEP = Individualized Educational Program, or the program that is unique for each Special Education student and needs to be implemented.
| Reduction in Service (if referendum does NOT pass) | Impact on schools and/or students |
|---|---|
| 75.45 FTE Special Education teachers and Special Education Assistants would be eliminated. | Higher Special Education teacher caseloads which would most likely result in less pupil- teacher contact time and more classrooms for the Special Education teacher to support. Less Special Education Assistant support available to students. |
| 4.0 FTE central office English as a Second Language and Special Education support positions would be eliminated. | Reduced technical assistance and support to schools from program support staff. Higher workload for centrally coordinated IEP system Program Support Teachers to complete initial evaluations. |
| 1 Positive Behavior Support Team would be eliminated (3.0 FTE on each team.) | Reduced support to students with severe emotional, behavioral and mental health challenges. Greater risk of physical aggression to other students and staff. |
