News from the Transportation Office
August

Dear Parents:

Here are some frequently asked questions of the transportation office. Perhaps these questions and answers will help you prepare for the 2007-08 school year.

Who is eligible for transportation?

The Madison school district provides for the transportation of all students in grades kindergarten through grade five living more than 1.5 miles from their assigned school, or in an area where recognized unusual hazards exist. As a general policy, transportation is not provided for students above grade five. Exceptions are made where no public transportation is available, as well as for those special education students for whom yellow bus and public transportation are not feasible.

Is my child able to ride the bus to/from the baby sitter or day care?

Possibly, but transportation is based on where you live not where your day care is located. Any exceptions must be requested each year in writing. Such exceptions are approved if space is available on the bus, if the route is not altered and if your child follows the bus rules.

Are the stops the same every year?

While stops are fairly consistent from year to year, changes are made based on the location of students, safety, etc. Check the Wisconsin State Journal and Capital Times the week of August 22, 2005 or call the school or transportation office for information regarding the location of your child's nearest bus stop.

I feel that my child has too far to walk to the bus stop. What can I do about it?

For efficiency of operation, the number of stops, number of turns and retracing of paths must be kept to a minimum. Under normal conditions, kindergarten through grade five students may be required to walk up to one-fourth mile to the nearest bus stop. Sometimes a longer distance is required in the event of dead end streets, inadequate turning area, etc. Any requests for changes in routing or stops must be made in writing to the transportation office so that a careful study of alternatives may be made.

What if my child wants to have a friend who normally doesn't ride the bus, get off at our house?

  1. The parent shall make the initial request by phone either through the bus company or the transportation coordinator, for the purpose of verifying that space is available and an appropriate bus stop exists.

  2. The parent shall send a written request with the child on the day transportation is needed. This request will be screened by the principal and delivered to the bus driver to authorize transportation.

If you have any questions, I urge you to call the transportation office before August 29. The transportation office is staffed throughout the summer months.

"News" will be updated monthly.
