All middle and high school students are assigned to a guidance counselor. The school
counselors:
- Organize and Implement a Development Guidance Program and Curriculum
that facilitates student success in three areas:
- Academic Development
- Career Development
- Personal/Social Development
- Provide Individual Planning and Guidance for individuals and groups
of students to include:
- Assessment
- Advising
- Career Exploration
- Decision Making
- Life Planning
- Asses the need for and provide Responsive Services that include:
- Consultation
- Personal Counseling
- Small Groups
- Conflict Resolution
- Crisis Counseling
- Referral
- Develop and implement Systems Support initiatives that incorporate:
- Guidance Program Management, Operation and Evaluation
- Community Partnerships
- Professional Development
- Transition Programs for Students

The mission of counselors in the Madison Metropolitan School
District is to involve all students in the development of their
learning, career, and personal/social attributes in order to
become responsible and productive individuals. Counselors
develop and implement a comprehensive Developmental
Guidance Program that:
- Supports students' accomplishment of instructional
standards;
- Coordinates the efforts of students, parents, school staff,
community, and business partners;
- Attends to the needs, interests, and issues related to each
stage of student development and learning;
- Incorporates a variety of preventive and instructional
strategies;
- Facilitates students' transition through these diverse
developmental and learning stages.
