Bonnie Augusta Named to GLBTQ Position

Bonnie Augusta, a teacher in the Madison Metropolitan School District since 1976, has been named to the new position of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning (GLBTQ) resource teacher. She will take the position at the start of the 2001-02 school year, pending the approval of the Board of Education at their June 4 meeting.

The Board of Education created this post in February to improve the academic achievement, emotional security, and personal acceptance of GLBTQ students and staff and be a source of support and information to all students.

Among the responsibilities of this position are instituting district wide staff development on anti-harassment and safety issues related to sexual orientation; identifying and addressing the barriers to both academic success and safe environments; and responding as needed in crisis situations relating to harassment and GLBTQ issues.

For the last two years, Augusta has been a program support teacher in Special Education. Prior to that, she was the interim assistant principal at Cherokee Middle School for 18 months. Augusta has worked as a special education teacher from 1976 to 1998 at West and LaFollette High Schools, Lincoln Elementary and Cherokee.
