The Board of Education voted Monday night to name the new elementary school in the Cross Country area after labor leader Cesar Chavez. The name was chosen from a list of nearly 30 recommended by members of the community. The school will open next fall and is the first Madison school named in honor of a Latino.
Chavez, who died in 1993 at the age of 66, was a union organizer who helped establish the United Farm Workers in the late 1960s. He organized national boycotts of grapes and lettuce, protesting the treatment and working conditions of migrant farmers.
Cesar Chavez Elementary School, currently under construction, is an 88,000 square foot, two-story facility on 15 acres and is designed to accommodate up to 650 K-5 students.
