FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
TUESDAY, MARCH 13, 2001
The Madison Metropolitan School District will recognize the winners of the district's Distinguished Service Award (DSA) at a special meeting of the Board of Education on Monday, March 19 at 7:00 p.m. in the McDaniels Auditorium in the Doyle Administration Building, 545 West Dayton Street.
Staff members in 11 categories will receive the DSA, the district's highest honor for meritorious contributions to Madison's schools. This year's ceremony marks the 16th time the Board has honored outstanding teachers and support staff in this manner. Two citizen awards also will be given. And for the seventh time, students are among the DSA honorees.
Two Madison teachers and two students have been chosen to receive awards from the Kohl Foundation Scholarship and Fellowship program. The students are Initiative Scholars, 12th grade students who have shown promise for succeeding in college and beyond, but are ineligible for other academic-based scholarships. The teachers are given a fellowship for their ability to inspire a love of learning and for their leadership and service.
Each recipient receives $1,000 and the teacher's school also receives a matching grant from the Foundation.
DSA winners are chosen by a 21-member committee made up of teachers, administrators, parents, a student and citizens.
The ceremony will be shown live on MMSD-TV, Cable Channel 10, and also will be taped for later telecast.
