FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 2000
Student enrollment in the Madison Metropolitan School District for the 2000-01 school year is 25,087, -- an increase of 144 students – according to the official enrollment count conducted on the third Friday in September, as required by state law.
The 144-student growth ends two years of decreases, which had seen the District count go from 25,327 in 1997-98, to 24,943 last school year. Still, this year's total represents an increase of just over one-half of one per cent compared to last year.
The high school level accounts for the increase, going up 296 students from a year ago. Middle school enrollment (grades 6-8) is up 10 students, while elementary school enrollment is down 162 compared to last year.

After two years of declining enrollment, the District had predicted a further decrease of 278 students, down to 24,665. The final count thus exceeds the projection by 422 students, with all three levels showing increases.
"While we are pleased with an enrollment increase after two years of declining numbers, we are not willing to call this a trend," says Superintendent Art Rainwater. "State revenue caps make it difficult on districts in declining enrollment situations, so our enrollment rise is indeed welcome."
