FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 2001
Expulsions in the Madison Metropolitan School District dropped twenty percent for the 1999-2000 school year, with 35 students expelled, less than one-tenth of one percent of the student enrollment. Madison schools enroll over 25,000 students.
While 122 students were recommended for expulsion, all of these students were either given an alternative placement in lieu of expulsion or, if expelled, were given other options to return to school before the end of their expulsion period, if they met certain conditions.
Possession of a weapon accounted for 54 percent (19 students) of the expulsions. Most of the weapons confiscated were pocketknives. Other offenses resulting in expulsions were bomb threats (5 students expelled, 14%) and selling, delivering or possessing a controlled substance (6 students expelled, 17%). These three offenses accounted for 85 percent (30 students) of the expulsions.
For the 87 students who were recommended for expulsion, but not expelled, the district has several programs that students attend as alternative placements instead of expulsion.
For the 35 students who were expelled after a due process hearing, all of these students were given the option of returning to school before the end of their expulsion period if they met certain conditions. These conditions may include anger management counseling, alcohol and other drug assessment, individual therapy, or other stipulations.
