FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2000
Journalists from four nations - Belgium, South Africa, the Philippines and the United Kingdom - will visit La Follette High School on Friday, October 6 from 8:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. to interact with students in class and to be interviewed by staff members of "The Lance," La Follette's student newspaper.
The journalists visiting Madison are part of a three-week tour of the U.S. under the auspices of the International Visitor Program (IVP), sponsored by the U.S. State Department. Now in its 60th year, the IVP is designed to increase mutual international understanding. Participants are selected by U.S foreign embassy staff.
The journalists will interact with students in Rod Bina's World History class from about 8:50 - 9:30 a.m. Each journalist will discuss their country and the status of journalists, followed by questions from the students on culture, customs, economics and related issues. The morning will conclude with a brief tour of the school and an interview with La Follette journalism students.
While in Madison, the foreign journalists will meet with Gov. Tommy Thompson's press secretary and other state officials, in addition to local reporters.
