New School Groundbreaking Set for September 5th

The formal groundbreaking for the new elementary school in the Cross Country area on Madison's far southwest side is set for Tuesday, September 5 from 1:30 – 2 p.m. The new school's address is 3502 Maple Grove Drive (please see a map of the area). Superintendent Art Rainwater and the members of the Board of Education invite the community to the event. Students currently attending Huegel Elementary, many of whom will be attending the new school next year, will help to turn shovels of dirt as part of the groundbreaking event. Howard Fried, currently the assistant principal at Huegel and tabbed to be the new school's principal, will make brief comments along with Rainwater, School Board President Calvin Williams, and referendum co-chairs Joan Eggert and Jeff Leverich.

The new school is being built after voters approved the $11 million construction by a 60 percent margin (12,921, yes – 8,725, no) last November. The school, a two-story, 88,000 square foot building designed for 650 K-5 students, is situated on a 15 acre site in the Cross Country area.
