Lapham Elementary Receives 4-year Family Literacy Grant

Lapham Elementary has received a four-year, $590,000 Even Start Family Literacy grant to work with economically and educationally disadvantaged families, providing a wide-range of skills and activities for parents and their children. The term of the federal grant, which begins during the 2000-01 school year, is contingent upon local matching funds and ongoing progress with the proposal's goals.

The Lapham partners, who will match the Even Start grant resources, are: Madison Area Technical College, Family Enhancement, Omega School, the Dane County Job Center, Red Caboose Day Care Center, and the Wil-Mar Neighborhood Center. The grant has several components including, adult education and employment services, parenting activities and assistance with child behavior management, child development, nutrition, parent-child interaction activities and home visitation.

The program will draw from families in the East High School attendance area, serving 30 families and up to 100 children. In the first year, families will be recruited from the Lapham/Marquette area – specifically, families with children enrolled in Lapham's 4-year old program or early childhood program. Screening for new entries into these programs will take place the last week of August.
