Major Contribution Means Eastside Athletic Facility to be Built

Because of a $750,000 lead gift, the proposed Eastside athletic facility will be built and ready for game events by the fall of next year.

John H. "Jack" Lussier has made a personal contribution that represents 75% of the $1 million estimated cost to construct and equip an athletic facility for varsity football, soccer and track and field events to be located behind La Follette High School on the city's southeast side.

The facility, to be called Lussier Stadium, will be home to teams from both East and La Follette High Schools. It will seat up to 3,500 persons and have a scoreboard, concessions building, restrooms, a press box, and lights.

"We are impressed and honored that Mr. Lussier has stepped forward and made this facility a reality," said Superintendent Art Rainwater. "This gift addresses a longtime need for an eastside facility dedicated to high school athletics."

Lussier's donation is sufficient to get the project going, according to Roger Price, assistant superintendent for business. "We welcome inquiries from other potential donors to complete the funding package."

"I read an article in The Capital Times about the definite need for East and La Follette to have their own athletic facility," said Lussier. "I have seen the many longtime benefits of high school athletic competition."

Lussier is on the board of directors of The Capital Times, and is president of the Evjue Foundation, the charitable arm of The Capital Times. This personal gift is the latest of several made by Lussier, including a $1 million contribution to the east and west YMCA.

In addition to being the site for football, girls and boys soccer, and girls and boys track and field, Lussier Stadium will be able to accommodate large track and field meets, such as invitationals, conference and WIAA events.
