FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MONDAY, MAY 21, 2001
The high school graduation of the first two Mann Scholars in the Madison Metropolitan School District will be celebrated at an open house on Wednesday, May 23, 2001 in the Red Gym (716 Langdon Street) on the UW-Madison campus. The event runs from 4:30 - 7:30 p.m. with a program at 5:00 p.m.
Joey Brown, Memorial High School, and Brian Wilson, West High School, are graduating seniors who will begin college this fall at UW-Oshkosh and UW-Milwaukee respectively. They were named as the first Mann Scholars in 1997 as they entered high school.
The Mann Scholars program honors the legacy of Bernard and Kathlyn Mann, African American parents whose five children graduated from Madison schools and went on to earn college degrees. After their deaths, family and friends created an endowment fund through the Madison Community Foundation to support the academic achievement of promising high school students who are selected district-wide as eighth graders.
Selected Mann Scholars receive $1000 per year each year during high school, mentoring support and assistance in planning their high school and post-secondary studies.
The new Mann Scholars for 2001 are Uriah Harris, Cherokee Middle School, and Stephanie Osuocha, Sennett Middle School. They will be introduced at the May 23 open house.
Modeled after the Mann program, the Sanchez Scholar program was launched in 1999 to support native Spanish-speaking students. New Sanchez Scholars for 2001 are Luz Miranda, Hamilton Middle School, and Ulises Palacios, Sennett Middle School.
