FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
THURSDAY, MAY 17, 2001
For the second straight year, a Memorial High School senior has been named to the 20-member USA Today's All-USA High School Academic First Team. David Mericle, the only team member from Wisconsin, impressed judges with his dogged determination to teach Americans about Cuba.
Mericle, a two-time International ThinkQuest Internet Challenge winner for team Web sites on Cuba (http://library.thinkquest.org/18355/) and global environmental issues (http://library.thinkquest.org/26026/), has worked to organize student exchanges between the USA and Cuba, despite difficult roadblocks and challenges.
Mericle's credentials include representing the USA at a science conference in Singapore, editor of the student newspaper, captain of the school debate, Academic Decathlon and math teams, founder of a Net consulting business and a member of the Madison Student Senate.
Mericle, a 4.0 student, will receive a trophy for the honor in addition to a $2,500 cash award. He plans to attend Harvard in the fall. His parents are Kenneth Mericle and Mindy Taranto.
Last year, Po-Shen Loh, then a Memorial senior, received first team honors. Loh was also the only Wisconsin team member.
