56 Madison Students Named National Merit Semifinalists

Record Number Qualify for Scholarship Program

The highest number in the history of the Madison School District, 56 students, have qualified as semifinalists in the competition for 2001 National Merit Scholarship Awards.

The previous record number was 53 Madison students named two years ago. Last year there were 47 who qualified as semifinalists.

"The semifinalists and their families deserve congratulations for this outstanding achievement," said Superintendent Art Rainwater. "The record number speaks volumes about the top quality teachers and other staff members in the Madison district."

Semifinalists must meet academic and other standards to advance to the finalist level and consideration for college undergraduate scholarships.

Madison's semifinalists include: Jessica Telschow and Renae Youngs from LaFollette High School; Seamus Abshere, Anna Cavallo, Shawn Drenning, Heather Entwistle, David Houlihan, Melissa Johnson, Jenna Kanter, Andrew Rossmeissl, Michael Stapelmann, Patrick Stevens, Ross Tiefenthaler, Benjamin Tradewell, Derek Worthington and Brendan Younger from East High School; Julia Benjamin, Karin Dahlgren, Rebecca Ganetzky, Ariela Karasov, Linden Klein, Andrew Kushner (added name), Elizabeth Lemke-Oliver, Franda Li, Nathaniel Mahlberg, David Mericle, Elizabeth Morgan, Tyler Phelps, Emily Stevens, Zachary Swee, Maya Thet, Ashley Warring and Noam Yuchtman from Memorial High School; Amanda Bowman, Paul Braun, Alaina Davis, Nathan Floody, Alexander Grogan, Steven Hall, Alexander Hess, James Jeanne, Carolyn Kelly, David Kerman, Nina Lerner, Annelise Malkus, Shi Wen Mo, Stephen Nystrand, Anna Louise Ogden-Nussbaum, Benjamin Parrell, Gabriel Prager, Abigail Rao, Malka Salomon, Mark Street, Matthew Wang, Martin Zeppenfeld and one student who asked to not be identified, all from West High School.
