Rennebohm Grant Awards and Scholars Named

Nine very diverse grants have been awarded and ten staff members have been selected as scholars in the first year of the Rennebohm Scholars Program.

The program comes about because the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) has received a five-year $375,000 Rennebohm Foundation grant. It is being used to support grants for innovative projects designed by MMSD staff, and to create the Rennebohm Scholars Academy, a group of creative and innovative staff members who will explore District issues.

The nine grants provide funding of just under $50,000 for the 2001-02 school year, and will support initiatives that are designed to improve student achievement through professional development, direct service to students and/or collaboration with parents. The grants are awarded to the following persons, their school, and project:

Mary Birmingham, Glendale Elementary, Peaceful Playgrounds

Signe Carney and Linda McQuillen, Memorial, Finding the Facts about Integrated Mathematics

Jane Hammatt-Kavaloski and Colleen Kellogg, Shabazz City High School, Learning to Serve - Serving to Learn

David Medearis, middle school level, Writing Solutions for Struggling Writers

Barb Rubin, Franklin Elementary, Empowering Children and Families of Color

Don Vincent, West, Worldwide Weather Station

The ten members of the Scholars Academy were chosen through nomination based on their innovation, problem-solving skills, and exhibiting a District perspective. They will serve a three-year term beginning with the 2001-02 school year. They are:
