Grant Will Help Develop Innovative Teaching Approaches

$375,000 Grant from Rennebohm Foundation

The Rennebohm Foundation of Madison has awarded the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) $375,000 in funding over five years to establish grants for MMSD teachers to develop and implement innovative instructional programs in their individual classrooms. The funding will also help create a District instructional "think tank" made up of these creative teachers.

"We are excited about this grant because it will provide the funding for some of our excellent teachers to try new approaches to classroom instruction, and allow us to utilize the creative thinking and experience of these innovative teachers to address district-wide issues," said Superintendent Art Rainwater.

Individual teachers will submit grant requests to fund classroom approaches that are not currently being utilized in the MMSD. These grants can be used to fund any area of classroom instruction or student interaction that advances the body of teaching knowledge.

The "think tank" or Academy of Scholars will be composed of those teachers who have successfully implemented and evaluated one of the grants. The hope is that the collective wisdom of the best and brightest innovators will provide the District with successful solutions to the many instructional problems facing all school districts.

Information for MMSD teachers about submitting grant requests will come out later this school year from the Superintendent's office.
