Ho-Chunk Family Tree Sculpture To Be Unveiled at Thoreau Elementary

An 11-foot wood sculpture created by a well known Ho-Chunk artist from the trunk of a 143 year old oak that once graced the Thoreau school grounds will be unveiled and dedicated on Thursday, May 3 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. behind the school, 3870 Nakoma Road.

The public is invited to attend this event, which will include traditional Ho-Chunk dances and songs. The unveiling should take place between 1:15 and 2:00 p.m.

Ho-Chunk artist Harry Whitehorse has named the modern oak sculpture "Ho-Chunk Family Tree" in part because his relatives used to live on this land near Lake Wingra that is now the school site. As part of the year long artist-in-residence program, Whitehorse has visited the students on several occasions, and students and staff have visited his studio to see the sculpture in progress. The sculpture will eventually be placed inside the school library.

Funding for this project has come from the Dane County Cultural Arts Commission, the Madison Community Foundation, the Overture Foundation, Pleasant Company's Fund for Children and the Wisconsin Arts Board.

The on-site contacts with more information and background packets are Margaret Planner, principal, and Sadie Larkin (267-4200). For more information about the sculpture, visit Whitehorse's Web site, http://www.harrywhitehorse.com.
