East's Williams Selected for Fulbright Teacher Program in Japan

Otistine Williams, a special education teacher at East High School, will participate in the Fulbright Memorial Fund (FMF) Teacher Program for three weeks in Japan beginning Sunday, November 12. Williams is one of 200 U.S. elementary and secondary teachers selected from over 2,600 applicants to participate in the program designed to promote greater intercultural understanding between the two nations.

Participants will visit schools in 10 prefectures (states) to interact with Japanese students and teachers. They will also visit cultural sites and local industries and stay with Japanese families. The trip is fully funded by the Japanese government, which launched the FMF Teacher Program four years ago to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the U.S.-initiated Fulbright Program. Over 6,000 Japanese citizens have come to the U.S. on Fulbright scholarships for graduate education and research.

This year, 600 teachers and administrators from all 50 states and the District of Columbia will visit Japan as part of the FMF Teacher Program. Williams, who has taught special education at East for seven years, is particularly interested in observing special education classes in Japan.
