Two Students Receive Highest Scores on both ACT and SAT

Two students at Madison Memorial High School have earned the highest possible scores on both the ACT Assessment and the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT).

Mike He and Liana Prescott, both seniors-to-be at Memorial, scored 36's on the ACT and 1600's on the SAT in the two college assessments taken earlier this year.

In addition, a third Memorial student, Po-Ru Loh, recorded a 36 on the ACT assessment. According to ACT, there were nine Wisconsin students earning the highest possible scores in the 2000-01 school year, with three of those nine coming from Memorial High School.

According to ACT, only one in every 6,400 students who took the test in the last year scored a 36. SAT data indicates that only one in every 4,100 test-takers in 1999-2000 earned a 1600 score. For a student to reach these scores on both assessments is even more exceptional.

Mike He is 17 years old and the son of Judy and Bob He. Mike says his favorite subjects are math and science, and he is considering pursuing engineering or a science in college. Mike is on the school's debate team, the forensics team, the math team, the Science Olympiad, he tutors other students and writes for an independent student newspaper.

Liana Prescott is 17 years old and the daughter of Richard and Elizabeth Prescott. Liana says she likes all her school subjects, and is considering studying math, physics or music in college. Liana plays the flute and is in the high school band and orchestra, and plays for the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestra. She's also on the math team and an editor for the independent student newspaper. Liana's sister, Moire, also earned a 1600 on the SAT exam four years ago.
