For their leadership in building new high school training rooms, Dr. Bill Bartlett and Joe Greene will receive special commendations from the Madison Board of Education at their regular meeting on Monday, March 4, 2002.
As a result of their outstanding work, East, La Follette, Memorial and West High Schools now have larger facilities equipped with new, state of the art rehabilitation and injury-prevention equipment that's used by boys and girls sports teams at all four levels of competition.
Dr. Bartlett has served as vice chair for the 15-member training room committee and has provided the major thrust for the program and its outreach to potential donors during the entire three year fund-raising effort. Bartlett, a retired pediatrician, and his wife, Phyllis, provided the lead gift of $75,000. The fund has grown to about $340,000 currently.
They have also established the William and Phyllis Bartlett Fund at the Foundation for Madison's Public Schools. The foundation's purpose is to receive funds to replace the four high schools' injury rehabilitation equipment, which receives intense use throughout the school year by up to 3000 female and male athletes.
Greene, a Certified Athletic Trainer at the UW-Madison Department of Sports Medicine, conceived of the idea of remodeling, or in some cases, replacing the existing training rooms. He conducted the original feasibility study and chaired a 15 person committee that conducted a number of fund-raising and outreach activities.
These facilities are also used for classes in exercise physiology and in introductory coursework about injury prevention and rehabilitation for high school students who aspire to work in the field of athletic training.
