Expulsions Still Less Than One-Tenth of One Percent of Enrollment

Expulsions in the Madison Metropolitan School District nudged up to 47 students for the 2000-01 school year, still less than one-tenth of one percent of the district's total enrollment of over 25,000 students attending last year.

For the 2000-01 school year, 137 students were recommended for expulsion, but the overwhelming majority were diverted into alternative programs in lieu of expulsion. In some instances, students expelled were given other options to return to school before the end of the expulsion period if the students met strict behavioral conditions.

Possession of a weapon accounted for 57% (27 students) of the expulsions. Most of the weapons confiscated were knives (22 students). No student was expelled for carrying a traditional firearm, but one student was expelled for having a pellet gun.

Other offenses resulting in expulsions included: using force against a staff member (6 students), bomb threat (4 students) and selling, delivering or possessing a controlled substance (4 students). These four offenses accounted for 87% (41 students) of the expulsions.

No elementary student was expelled; 23 middle school students were expelled along with 24 high school students. By gender, 83% of those expelled were males and 13% females.

For the 90 students recommended for expulsion, but not expelled, the district has several alternative programs the students were diverted into. These programs include REPLAY (Re-directive, Pro-Social, Learning Alternative for Youth), NEON (an alternative program for middle school emotionally disturbed special education students) and the Cluster Program, also designed for middle school students.
