Madison Students to Recite Pledge of Allegiance

New Law Requires Reciting Pledge or Singing National Anthem Daily

In order to comply with a new state law, Madison students will recite the pledge of allegiance daily beginning Monday, October 1, school district officials announced today.

The new law was incorporated into the 2001-03 biennial budget passed by the Legislature and signed into law in late August by the governor. The statute (118.06 (2) - Flag, pledge of allegiance, and national anthem.) says, "Every public school shall offer the pledge of allegiance or the national anthem in grades 1 to 12 each school day."

The new law further indicates, "No pupil may be compelled, against the pupil's objections or those of the pupil's parents or guardian, to recite the pledge, or to sing the anthem."
